SEATTLE – Washington has successfully returned to where its season started back in September, and its second run in Stillwater will decide the national championships. The Husky men's and women's teams have both reached nationals for the sixth year in a row, and they will see how high up the ladder they can climb early Saturday morning at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.

The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be televised live on ESPNU, with the women's race starting at 7:20 a.m. Pacific time and the men's race following at 8:10 a.m. Pacific.

Each race features 31 teams plus dozens more individual qualifiers. The Huskies are one of 19 programs to qualify both its men's and women's teams. This is the 16th consecutive NCAA appearance for the women's team, and the sixth-straight for the men's team. Washington goes into the meet ranked 15th on the women's side and 17th on the men's side but those rankings will mean little on race day.

All-America honors will once again go to the top-40 finishers. Brian Fay is the lone returning All-American for the Huskies. He finished 38th at the 2021 NCAA Championship in Florida. Fay is coming off a victory at the NCAA West Regional Championship last Friday in University Place, Wash.

Last year, the Husky men's team placed 13th overall while the women finished 11th. Five of the seven Husky men to race last year will be back on Saturday. One new face, Ed Trippas, has NCAA experience from his time at Princeton. Only Sam Affolder will be making his championships debut on the men's side. Fay, Isaac Green, Luke Houser, Leo Daschbach, and Joe Waskom will be the other five Husky men in action.

The women are traveling nine and will make a decision on the seven to run closer to race day. From last season's 11th-place team, the Huskies had to replace two of their top-three scorers, including All-American Allie Schadler, and Sophie Cantine. But the other five from the 2021 nationals squad are back this year, with some added freshman firepower.

Haley Herberg has only run at Pac-12s this season, but if anyone can jump back in and grind out a great race it's the two-time 10,000-meter All-American. Sophie O'Sullivan and Anna Gibson have had their best cross seasons, and both were All-West Region last week. Madison Heisterman also has run well at Nationals the past two meets, and is coming off a strong Regionals run. Andrea Markezich led the Dawgs at Pac-12s with an eighth-place finish, and Naomi Smith has been a top-five scorer for the Dawgs already at two NCAA meets, so the Dawgs could be led by any number of women on Saturday. That includes freshman Ella Borsheim, Chloe Foerster, and Sophia Nordenholz, all who will make the trip, and one or more will certainly be on the starting line.
