Positive Pac-12s As Men Take Third, Women Fifth
October 28, 2022 | Cross Country
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Led by top-10 finishes from Brian Fay on the men's side and Andrea Markezich on the women's side, the Husky cross country teams each took steps forward today at the Pac-12 Championships with their best collective races of the season. The 20th-ranked men placed third for the third-straight season, while the 19th-ranked women were fifth, just one point out of fourth and eight points out of third.
Racing mostly over dirt trails at the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course, the Huskies ran aggressively on both sides and built some momentum going into the NCAA West Regional Championships in two weeks that UW will be hosting at University Place, Wash.
In the women's race, the 19th-ranked Huskies came within a handful of points of knocking off a couple highly-ranked rivals, but were still encouraged by a fifth-place finish, scoring 94 points. Ninth-ranked Stanford was just one point ahead of the Huskies with 93 points, and 12th-ranked Oregon was third with 86 points, just eight points ahead of the Dawgs. 11th-ranked Colorado and 10th-ranked Utah tied with 66 points, with the Buffs winning the tiebreak.
"We were solid today," said Maurica Powell, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. "We had a ton of improvement in two weeks. Our number one didn't score for us today, and we were still way improved from two weeks ago."
Markezich, who had finished 23rd at both of her prior two Pac-12 Championships, broke into the top-10 today and led the Huskies for the first time ever. She covered the 6,000-meters in 19:37 for eighth. Sophie O'Sullivan also had a great day, placing 13th in 19:41. O'Sullivan was 31st a year ago.
Haley Herberg raced for the first time this season and placed 21st today in 19:57. Freshman Ella Borsheim had her best run yet this fall, placing 25th as the No. 4 scorer in 20-minutes flat. Capping the scoring was Madison Heisterman in 27th in 20:02. Right behind her was Naomi Smith in 29th in 20:03. Freshman Sophia Nordenholz was 36th in 20:13. Anna Gibson, who led UW at the first two races, had an off day and was 37th in 20:13. Chloe Foerster placed 44th and Carley Thomas 65th.
"Andrea is super fit and it was yet to translate into a race but today we saw her believe in herself and translate ability into confidence," said Powell. "Sophie O'Sullivan ran really confidently. Ella Borsheim ran confidently. Haley opened up, and she's just been training and hasn't really sharpened but she came out to grind and help our team, and she ran with confidence. We're starting to put pieces together that will put us right in the mix in two weeks. The two biggest races are coming and we're trending in the right direction."
In the men's race, the Huskies went out well and had the lead at the 2k split, though No. 1-ranked Stanford soon took over at the front and the remaining squads were fighting for second. Stanford would score just 22 points to win. 10th-ranked Colorado took second with 61 points, with 20th-ranked UW scoring 81 points for third, finishing ahead of 15th-ranked Oregon which was fourth with 94 points. It was then a large gap to UCLA in fifth with 142.
Brian Fay had his second-straight Pac-12 top-10 finish today as he was eighth in 22:57. Isaac Green continued his strong senior season with an 11th-place finish, a 22-place improvement from a year ago. Luke Houser was 15th in 23:15 for his third-straight top-20 Pac-12 finish.
Delivering a big run for the Dawgs in his first Pac-12 cross race was Sam Affolder who was 23rd in 23:39. He was just one second ahead of Joe Waskom, who capped UW's scoring in 24th-place as the Dawgs had their top-five all in the top-25. Ed Trippas was the No. 6 Dawg in 29th-place in 23:47, and Leo Daschbach was 44th overall in 24:28.
UW also closed well, going from 89 points with 500 meters to go down to 81 points, and closing the gap with Colorado from 27 points down to 20.
Head Coach Andy Powell said the Huskies were much improved from two weeks ago. "We figured we'd try to create havoc a little bit and we wanted to make it a hard race, so we sent Sam Ellis out there to make sure it was honest. They were flying through 3k. I think we knew Stanford was number one, but we thought we could disrupt some other teams. We were in front of Colorado for a bit, so to be close to a really good Colorado team and to beat Oregon was a really good showing from everybody."
On Nov. 11, the Huskies will be at home trying to book themselves a trip to NCAAs as West Regionals are held at Chambers Creek Regional Park. The women's race is at 10 a.m. followed by the men's race at 11 a.m.
