Women’s Tennis Sweeps Eastern 7-0
January 23, 2022 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington Women's Tennis team had another dominant performance as they went up against Eastern Washington University. They swept the Eagles, 7-0.
"It was great to get two matches in this weekend and just get experience," said Head Coach Robin Stephenson. "We have a lot of girls who have played a lot, but we also have some new girls in, so it was really good to see them out there."
To start things off, the Huskies (3-0) clinched the doubles point. Winning at the No. 3 position first, Kelly Leung and Zoey Weil defeated Gabuzyan/Mann of EWU, 6-1.
Next, on court two, Nika Zupancic and Sarah-Maude Fortin won 6-1. Finally, at the No. 1 position, Vanessa Wong and Hikaru Sato closed out the doubles sweep with a 6-2 victory.
In singles, Wong swept her opponent, Jennifer Kida 6-0, 6-0 on court one.
On court two, Fortin was up 5-0 in the first set when Scout Mathews of Eastern Washington retired from the match.
Zupancic took control early, winning 6-0, 6-1 on court three. While on court four, Sato clinched the Washington win, 6-0, 6-0.
"We have been super impressed with Hikaru [Sato]," said Stephenson. "She's been an awesome addition to our team. She's a great teammate and just works really hard. We are expecting really big things from her in singles and in doubles."
On court five, it was a battle to the end. For the Dawgs, Leung found herself down 5-2 in the first set. She was able fight back, taking the set into a tie breaker. In the tie-break she won 7-0, giving her the 7-6 first set win. In set number two, it was back-and-forth, until Leung closed out the win over Eastern Washington's Isabella Foshee, 6-3.
"It was great for Kelly [Leung], as a freshman, to get some home matches under her belt as well," said Stephenson. "Overall, I thought this weekend was really productive and we saw some good things. We got a lot of really good information about what we need to work on going forward."
Next, the Washington Women's Tennis team takes on the University of Denver in the ITA Kick-off Weekend on January 28 in Los Angeles, California.
