UW Athletics, Foster School Form 'Boundless Futures'
June 15, 2021 | Student-Athlete Academic Services
Boundless Futures ® partnered with the Foster School of Business this year to launch the Foster Leadership Academy, formerly known as the Husky Leadership Academy, where 25 student-athletes across seven different sports completed the academy.
The Foster Leadership Academy is a non-academic certification program that engages students in leadership experiences and reflection on their leadership journey through the lens of Authentic Leadership. Participants have the opportunity to connect with other students in their cohort, gain confidence, and improve transferable skills such as problem-solving, giving and receiving feedback, and more. Various workshops and leadership challenges were offered throughout the year for students to choose from, each focused on a specific leadership pillar. Guest speakers included Director of Athletics Jen Cohen, former UW football head coach Chris Petersen and two-time Olympian/UW Volleyball National Champion Courtney Thompson.
Students must write one reflection for each Authentic Leadership Pillar and submit a final project reflecting on their journey as a leader - in peer groups, activities, mentorship experience, Foster Leadership Academy, professional or personal life. Upon completion, each student receives a Certificate, Professional Foster Branded gift and a valuable leadership experience to add to their resume.
The Four Authentic Leadership Pillars:
-
Transparency: Authentic leaders exhibit transparency by openly sharing their true thoughts and feelings in the interest of exploring the right course of action rather than simply conceding to popular opinion.
-
Balance processing: Authentic leaders demonstrate balanced processing by accurately and objectively analyzing all relevant data and stakeholder views before coming to a decision.
-
Self-Awareness: Leaders who demonstrate high leader self-awareness are mindful of the ways they think about, feel about, and choose to affect others in the context of influencing them to do something.
-
Moral/Ethical Perspective: Authentic leaders possess a strong internalized moral perspective or "compass" that enables them to act in concert with their core values despite group, organizational or social pressures that could otherwise steer them off course.
