Throwers, Women’s 4x1 Shine At Ken Shannon
May 07, 2021 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – Washington closed out the regular season and its home season today at the Ken Shannon Invitational with a strong performance from a small group of competitors tuning up for the postseason. The Huskies also honored nineteen seniors in a ceremony at the end of the meet at the Husky Outdoor Track.
Even with just a limited number of athletes in action today, UW still saw three new Top-10 marks posted. Ida Eikeng and Connor Jost both PR'd to improve their standings within the women's javelin and men's hammer lists, and the Husky women's 4x100-meter relay ran a big season-best and jumped to No. 5 in UW history.
The women's 4x1 was the first race of the afternoon, and the group was ready to roll. Aaliyah Wilson led off, passing to Olivia Ribera, then Jelani Heath, and Victoria Gersch carried the baton across the finish in 45.47 seconds. That was a season-best of 0.42 seconds and the fastest time for the Huskies since 2017.
Eikeng was a double winner today, starting with another outstanding series in the javelin, where the heptathlete has proven that she is among the Pac-12's best in that event on its own. Eikeng threw 171-6 on her second attempt, a PR of more than five feet, and she moved up to No. 3 in school history, just three feet shy of the school record. It's also the third-best mark in the Pac-12 this season, and 19th in the NCAA. Eikeng had two more throws beyond her previous PR, going 169-9 on her fifth and 169-6 on her sixth attempts.
Eikeng then also ended the day winning the shot put with a best of 44-8 ¼. That is a season-best by a foot and her best mark in uniform. She threw slightly farther once unattached at the 2019 Ken Shannon.
In the men's hammer, Jost continued his great senior season with a series that included three PRs in total. Freshman Jayden White got the victory at 214-3, the second-best mark of his season. Jost took second, getting a PR first at 203-2 on his second throw, then extending it to 203-5 on his fourth attempt, and finally going 203-10 on his sixth attempt. He improves his No. 9 mark in school history.
The only other women's track entry was Gersch, who came back from anchoring the 4x1 to win the 200-meters in 24.74.
The men were led on the track by Julian Body in his last home meet, as he won the 200-meters in 21.55 and also won the 110m hurdles in 14.41, both into headwinds. Jonathan Birchman was second in the hurdles in 14.50 and Kemuel Santana was second in the 200m in 22.02.
Freshman Nolan Such also picked up two wins today, getting a PR in the shot put on his last attempt, going 54-1. He also came out on top of the discus field with a best of 152-7.
The Huskies will now put their travel squad together for the Pac-12 Championships, held in one week's time on May 14-16 at USC.
