Gritty Effort By Dawgs Comes Up Just Short At Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Huskies have put themselves right on the cusp of a breakthrough win for the third time this season, and most impressively this one came on the road, but 25th-ranked California had enough to pull out a 4-3 win over the Dawgs at the Hellman Tennis Complex. 49th-ranked Washington (9-5, 1-4 Pac-12) split singles matches against the Bears (11-3, 4-1) but Cal came out on top with the doubles point win.
This was Washington's first road match all season but it stepped up to the challenge against a Cal opponent that came in 7-0 on its home courts. Washington has now had 4-3 losses this year against then-No. 15 Baylor, then-No. 16 USC, and now No. 25 Cal.
The Huskies won on all the odd courts today. 30th-ranked Vanessa Wong kept rolling in singles, defeating 83rd-ranked Haley Giavara, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. Wong is now 14-1 on the season. Sedona Gallagher also put up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hannah Viller Moeller at No. 3 to improve to 12-2 in dual matches. Junior Zoey Weil then grabbed a huge point at the No. 5 singles spot, 6-4, 6-0, over Erin Richardson.
The Bears had straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 6 over freshmen Tara Chilton and Yolanda Lin. The match was even at 3-3 with freshman Sarah-Maude Fortin battling at No. 2 singles with Julia Rosenqvist. Rosenqvist had pulled out a tight first set, 7-5, and Fortin looked to get back even in the second set, but Rosenqvist held serve for a 5-3 lead and then broke to clinch it, 6-3.
Cal swept the doubles point to start things off. Bright/Viller Moeller defeated Weil and Lin, 6-2, and then Giavara/Ivanov won a number of close games en route to a 6-3 win at No. 1 over Gallagher and Wong. With the point clinched, Cal won the final three games at No. 3 doubles to earn a 7-5 win over Chilton and Fortin.
Washington will have another big road test tomorrow at 12 noon, heading across the Bay to take on 35th-ranked Stanford which is 8-0 to date.
