Meet The Washington Women's Rowing Team Class Of 2024
March 26, 2021 | Women's Rowing
While several members of the UW women's rowing team's class of 2024 did get to make their debut earlier this month vs. Washington State at Lake Las Vegas, many more will take part in their first official race as Huskies this Saturday, March 27, at the 120th Class Day Regatta.
The UW class of 2024 includes a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds, with a heavy emphasis on in-state student-athletes. In fact, of the 19 freshmen on the current roster, all are from the United States and 12 attended high school in the state of Washington. There are also two freshmen from California and one each from Oregon, Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas and Alaska.
The 19 women have greatly varying levels of experience, not uncommon at Washington, where there walk-on program for women who have never rowed prior to college has been a cornerstone of success for years.
Among the experienced rowers are five who rowed at Sammamish Rowing Club in Redmond, Wash.: August Cooke, Grace Epp, Brooklyn Fehling (who also rowed for Commencement Bay Rowing), Renee Rockett, and Claire Surbeck. Three of those five were in Sammamish's winning eight at 2019 Head of the Lake last school year. Rockett and Surbeck were both invited to USRowing High Performance camps while in high school.
Another freshman with local rowing experience is Aili Moore, who competed for Pocock Rowing and who was also a successful ski racer in her youth. Coxswain Taylor Tran, a graduate of Seattle's Garfield High, competed at Mount Baker Rowing.
From a bit farther afield is coxswain Anna Ellis, who rowed for Newport Aquatic Center in Newport Beach, Calif., where she competed at major regattas like the Head of the Charles and San Diego Crew Classic. She also participated in USRowing U19 developmental camp.
Thora Hornewer comes to UW from Chicago, where she rowed for the Chicago Rowing Association, with whom she won a Midwest Championship in 2019.
The remainder of the class of freshmen is a group with a history of high achievement, both in sports and in academics.
Those from the state of Washington include Grace Vander Griend (Bellingham/Sehome HS), Ellie Bertram (Mercer Island), Wen Eckelberg (Seattle/Cleveland STEM), Annika Keller (Ellensburg), and Ella Wheeler (Vashon Island).
Five more UW freshmen come from five different states: Olivia Craig (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy), Maya Flynn (Pewaukee, Wis.), Zoe Null (Novato, Calif./San Marin), Bridget Savage (Unalaska, Alaska), and Savanna Tucker (Austin, Texas/L.C.Anderson).
Lastly, though not a freshman, new to the women's team is Trinity Billingslea, a transfer from Santa Clara University. A high school water polo player, Billingslea rowed for the Broncos the last three years and was invited to the USRowing Under-23 Selection Camp in 2020.
