Schadler, Houser Lead Huskies At NCAA Cross
March 15, 2021 | Cross Country
STILLWATER, Okla. – Senior Allie Schadler and redshirt freshman Luke Houser led the Husky women's and men's cross country teams to top-25 team finishes today at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted for the first time by Oklahoma State at the OSU Cross Country Course. The women's team earned a 13th-place finish today while the men came in 25th overall.
Schadler earned some redemption today as just two days ago at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, she was tripped by a runner and fell with two laps to go in the 3,000-meter final. She shook that off and turned in by far the best NCAA cross country run of her career, earning All-America honors with a 26th-place finish in 20:43 for the 6k course. Schadler's previous career-best NCAA XC run was 102nd in 2018.
Houser, making his first run at NCAA XC, had a great debut, placing 51st overall in 31:01 for 10,000-meters, just eleven places away from All-America honors.
Director of Track & Field and women's coach Maurica Powell was proud of the effort of the women's team which challenged itself to compete in indoor track and cross country simultaneously in this unorthodox season. The women were seventh at the 5k split, as Powell said "they took a swing at it" and almost pulled it off.
"I'm really proud of these women and the way they dug in for each other and tried to help their team however they could," said Powell. "We had three women today who raced within 48 hours at indoor track and so to be split over two meets in one weekend, we did well with what we had. Kelly Makin and Madi Heisterman raced six weeks straight in indoors or cross. Madi just hit the wall hard with 300-meters to go today and ran to complete exhaustion, but she gave life to finish for her team and we're really proud of her."
After Schadler, freshman Naomi Smith put a great capper on her excellent first cross campaign, taking 53rd in 21:05. Crossing at the same second, two spots back, was Haley Herberg who took a shot at leading the first 2k as she did at Pac-12s, but the fierce winds today made that a challenge. Still, Herberg improved 61 spots on her NCAA placing from a year ago. Camila David-Smith had a strong finish, improving 24 spots over the last 1k to place 133rd, an improvement of 31 spots over last year. Then Heisterman fought her way across in 151st in 21:52 to cap the scoring. Kelly Makin finished 194th today and Andrea Markezich was 205th.
Powell was pleased with the way Schadler bounced back from the disappointment of having her indoor championship experience spoiled and rallying for her team today.
"What Allie showed today is she has a completely different mindset this year," said Powell. "She sees herself as one of the best in the NCAA and it was unfortunate she fell on Saturday because she was in a good position to take a shot at it. She could have been an emotional basketcase and hung her head the last two days but she kept it up and ran hard for her team and had a great outcome."
The men's team finished 25th today, making a streak of four years of top-25 finishes, the second longest such streak in school history behind the five-straight top-25 finishes from 1987-91.
It was a young squad racing today, with a true freshman, two redshirt freshmen, a sophomore and a junior making up the top-five. Redshirt frosh Houser led the Dawgs and was followed by junior Isaac Green, who was 104th in 31:34 and he picked up 27 spots over the final 1,000-meters. Redshirt freshman Joe Waskom was 145th in 32:09 and then sophomore Isaac Mohn scored for the Dawgs in 167th-place in 32:23. Freshman Leo Daschbach capped the scoring in 199th-place today in just his second career race. Alex Slenning placed 216th and Tibebu Proctor did not finish after being has high as 44th overall at the 3k mark.
"The guys started well and were in the top-10 early and I think we competed hard," said men's coach Andy Powell. "Tibs dropped out with a medical issue and was unable to complete the race. He's doing fine now, but that made it tough. Luke Houser was a solid front runner for us and without Tibs there this is a really young group. So we got some much needed experience without burning eligibility and I think this can be a top-10 team in the fall if we learn from this. Overall there were a lot of good things this season with good indoor marks, hosting and running well at Pac-12s and making it to the national meet. We will quickly get recovered and get ready for the outdoor season."
