Cunningham Named Specialist Of The Week
February 16, 2021 | Gymnastics
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 today honored Amara Cunningham as the Specialist of the Week following impressive performances against Oregon State and UCLA. Cunningham won back-to-back floor titles, earning the event title in both meets.
This is the first weekly award from the Pac-12 in Cunningham's career. Only two other GymDawgs in program history have been named Specialist of the Week before: Ashley Houghting and Nikki Waiss, who each earned the award once in 2008. Cunningham becomes the 11th GymDawg all-time to earn a weekly award from the Pac-12 and the first active GymDawg to do so.
Cunningham was excellent in both of Washington's meets last week. First, against Oregon State, she won her second career floor event title, earning a 9.900. On vault, she just barely missed a second event title, finishing second on the event with a score of 9.825.
Against UCLA, Cunningham was on point once again. In Washington's last routine of the meet, Cunningham matched her career high with a score of 9.925 on floor, putting her ahead of teammate Geneva Thompson to win the event title. Cunningham has earned a score of 9.875 or higher on all four of her floor routines during the 2021 season. Since the beginning of 2020, Cunningham has scored below a 9.800 on floor just once while recording five scores of 9.900 or higher.
Next up for the GymDawgs is a trip to Arizona to take on the Wildcats on Saturday, February 20 at 12:00 pm PT. That meet will be streamed live via the free Arizona live stream.
