MADISON, Wisc. – Haley Herberg and Kieran Lumb, in his first NCAA competition, each led the Husky cross country teams to top-15 finishes today at the Wisconsin Invitational, the biggest and deepest race of the season. The women's squad placed 15th today and outran seven teams ranked in the top-30, and the UW men also beat out seven ranked men's teams with a 14th-place finish.

The Huskies were two out of a total of 37 ranked teams combining the men's and women's top-30 polls that converged on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course today. Herberg, the junior All-American, had a 49th-place finish in the women's race and the men were led by Lumb, a senior transfer from the University of British Columbia making his Husky debut with a 44th-place finish.

The women's team totaled 463 points for 15th overall. Following Herberg, second-year freshman Naomi Smith was 71st in 21:08. Sophie Cantine was the third Husky in 103rd-place in 21:19 and Allie Schadler was one second behind her in 106th. The top-five was rounded out by Anna Gibson who placed 140th in 21:33. Freshman Julia David-Smith was 175th and Madison Heisterman placed 191st.

Though the Huskies were aiming higher in the team race, they still came through as the top Pac-12 squad out of five entries, including finishing just ahead of No. 9 Stanford, and also outpacing 30th-ranked Oregon State, Oregon, and Washington State. The Huskies also beat out 18th-ranked Portland, 20th-ranked Villanova, 21st-ranked Indiana, 26th-ranked Connecticut, and 28th-ranked Furman.

The women's B-race had strong efforts from three more Huskies. Third-year Andrea Markezich was fifth overall in 21:10, a time that would have been third for the Dawgs in the invite. Second-year Sophie O'Sullivan was 14th in 21:33 and Camila David-Smith was 22nd in 21:53.

"The women didn't perform well today, we did a poor job in managing attitude and effort, the two things we can control," said Director Maurica Powell. "If we can get a better handle on those, we can reach our potential -- we didn't reach it today."

Lumb, a Canadian collegiate national champion at UBC, crossed in 24:00 to lead the Huskies today. Second-year freshman Leo Daschbach was nine seconds back in 61st-place, followed by Luke Houser who was 74th in 24:16. Joe Waskom was the fourth Husky in 105th-place in 24:33, and Tibebu Proctor finished the scoring in 122nd-place in 24:38. Proctor moved up well after being back in 202nd-place at the 2k split and 177th at the 4k.

Ryan Renken placed 139th for the Dawgs in 24:45 and Isaac Green had his season debut in 146th-place overall in 24:50. The Huskies had one runner in the B-race, as Isaac Mohn finished 21st overall in 25:07.

In the final tally, the men had 402 points for 14th-place. The Dawgs had head-to-head wins against 14th-ranked Iona, No. 16 Butler, No. 18 North Carolina, No. 21 Southern Utah, No. 27 Syracuse, and both teams tied for No. 30, Portland and Purdue.

Next up for the Huskies will be the Pac-12 Championships, in two weeks' time, on October 29 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
