‘Rivals Unite’ To Register And Educate
September 14, 2020 | General
SEATTLE – Exercising the right to vote is one thing that can unite the fiercest rivals, and to illustrate that point, Washington Athletics is joining together with Washington State for an educational session and a friendly competition.
To show that they are "Rivals United", the Huskies and Cougars will be competing to see which athletic department can get the highest percentage of eligible student-athletes registered by National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 22.
On the evening of the 22nd, UW and WSU will take part in a joint educational session open to all student-athletes, coaches, and administrative staff. Guest presenters will cover the following topics:
HISTORY: Understanding the historical significance of voting in our country.
IMPACT: The impact and importance of voting and advocacy work in our local and national communities.
ACTIVISM: How to get involved beyond registering to vote and staying active in Washington.
"We are really excited about this initiative with Washington State," said Jen Cohen, Director of Athletics. "It's so important for our student-athletes and staff to be educated on the voting process and this is another way we can do that. Pat (Chun) and I have great respect for one another and a friendly competition, that most importantly benefits our student-athletes at both schools, is something I'm really looking forward to."
In advance of Sept. 22, Washington's Black Student-Athlete Alliance will create and share a calendar of important election-related dates with student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
MaKayla Woods, a junior on the Husky women's soccer team and a co-President of the UW Black Student-Athlete Alliance said, "The BSAA is very excited about the opportunity to be a part of this. We believe that voter education, especially for the youth, is imperative. Voter education is something that our athletes can take with them forever. Education on this topic is something that will empower our athletes and make them feel more confident in their ability to not only navigate the voting process but give them the ability to make the most informed decision possible."
Through nonpartisan resources, Washington Athletics is seeking to unite and empower its student-athletes, coaches, and staff members on topics of voter registration, voter education, and community service. While the immediate focus will be this November's election, Washington is committed to making voter empowerment a lasting value of the department every year moving forward.
On Sept. 9, Washington announced that Election Day 2020 on Nov. 3 would be free from all athletics-related activities, to allow student-athletes, coaches and staff to focus on casting their ballots and civic engagement.
The winner of the department voter registration competition will be announced during the Sept. 22 educational session, although registration in the state of Washington remains open online through Oct. 26 and in-person up until Election Day on Nov. 3.
