Huskies Add JC Transfer Grace Beasley
May 15, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- University of Washington women's basketball Head Coach Jody Wynn announced the addition of point guard Grace Beasley to the 2020-21 roster on Friday.
Beasley, a 5-7 point guard from Melbourne, Australia, joins the Huskies after spending two seasons at Midland College in Texas.
"Grace is tough as nails and is the kind of competitor we love to coach," said Wynn. "She has been Midland's second leading scorer and rebounder at the point guard position for the past two years, and rises to challenging situations. Grace has a high basketball IQ and does a great job at making her teammates better. She is a leader on and off the court, has a tremendous work ethic, and knows what it takes to succeed. We can't wait to bring Grace to Seattle and welcome her to our Husky family!"
"As soon as Washington spoke with me, I had a good feeling about them, I could feel that the coaches were very proud of their program and cared about their players," said Beasley. "Family is a big thing for me, and I could see that at Washington they are like a big family. Being an international student, it is always nice to have a sense of family around you when you are on the other side of the world. Washington competes in one of the toughest conferences in the nation and I want to be a part of that. I am excited for the challenge and competing against some of the best every week."
Beasley was at two-time All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) and selection as both a freshman and sophomore at Midland. Over her two seasons, she started all 59 games, averaging 11.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game with a 1.5 assist to turnover ratio.
As a freshman, Beasley was one vote shy of earning Freshman Player of the Year honors while leading the Lady Chaps in scoring at 11.5 ppg. She twice earned conference player of the week honors and posted her first collegiate triple double with a 15-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist performance (adding six steals) in a 93-60 win over Frank Phillips.
During her sophomore season, Beasley averaged 10.7 points and ranked second on the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. She scored in double-figures in 17 games including two games with 21 points and posted four double-doubles. Beasley helped guide Midland to a third-place finish at the midseason WNIT Tournament, earning all-tournament recognition after averaging over 11 ppg in three games.
"Grace is one of the most competitive kids I've coached in my 26 years at Midland College," said Midland College Head Coach Ron Jones. "I truly enjoyed coaching her. She is a great teammate, a leader by example, and she will run through a brick wall for you. Despite her size, she's the best rebounding guard I've ever coached."
"I am confident that the style of basketball that Washington plays will really suit me," said Beasley. "I love that they want to play fast and push the ball; it is something I definitely think is a strength of mine. They are such a talented team with a fierce work ethic, and I am looking forward to being a part of that; learning and competing with them every day. I believe the coaching staff at Washington will take my game to a whole new level and it really excites me—it is putting me in a great place to reach my goals of playing professionally after college."
Beasley attended Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne, helping guide the team to back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017. She also was awarded All-Star Five in the Victorian Youth Championships Women's League in 2018 and the Waverley Falcons Youth League MVP the same year.
Beasley joins a trio of incoming freshmen: Jayda Noble, Tameiya Sadler, and Alexis Whitfield as additions to the 2020-21 roster. She also becomes the second Australian on the Husky roster, joining fellow junior Darcy Rees.
