
Nelson Earns Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Gymnastics Award

SEATTLE - Washington's own Michaela Nelson has earned the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Gymnastics Award. Nelson is the sole representative of NCAA Gymnastics to earn the award, given out "to honor students of color who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field... in addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership."
Nelson was one of 700+ nominees for the Arthur Ashe award and one of 12 nominees from the University of Washington. Nelson is one of the top female recipients for the award and earned the sports-specific gymnastics award.
In her time at Washington, Nelson served three years on the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as president as a senior. She also founded the Black Student-Athlete Alliance at Washington. Nelson was one of 12 Huskies selected to the Husky Leadership Academy and one of two in the conference selected to the Pac-12 Student-Athlete Leadership Team.
In all four of her years, Nelson earned Dean's List for her academic achievements, compiling a 3.68 cumulative GPA. She was a part of two NCAA Nationals teams, helping the GymDawgs make back-to-back nationals for the first time since the 1990s. Nelson will graduate from Washington with a degree in Public Health with a minor in Diversity.
