2020 Captain & Class Day Awards Winners Announced
March 20, 2020 | Men's Rowing
At the awards ceremony following Class Day, the crowd assembled on the docks at Conibear Shellhouse are introduced to men's and women's team captains, as well as the winners of the Pigott Most Inspirational Award and the Schaller Scholarship Award, given to the upperclassman with the highest grade point average on each team.
While there will be no Class Day this year, those award-winners have been determined and deserve to be celebrated. They are:
TEAM CAPTAIN:
George Esau (pictured)
PIGOTT MOST INSPIRATIONAL AWARD:
Chase Deitner
SCHALLER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD:
Chase Deitner (3.81 GPA, electrical engineering)
Senior Class: Kelly Bond (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), David Bridges (Portland, Ore.), Elliott de Bruin (San Francisco, Calif.), George Esau (Long Lake, Minn.), Samuel Halbert (Redmond, Wash.), Austin Regier (Burien, Wash.), Felix Reinhold (Cape Town, South Africa), Carsten Rossen (Seattle, Wash.), Pau Turina (Portland, Ore.), Alexander Vollmer (Hamburg, Germany), and Cole Zwierzynski (Portland, Ore.)
This class has helped the Husky men win the Pac-12 Championship each of the last three years, winning 13 out of a total of 15 finals, including the varsity eight all three years. These Huskies won the Windermere Cup each of the last three years, including an epic win over English collegiate powerhouse Oxford Brookes in 2018, and the Huskies have won the varsity eight race at the Cal Dual each of the last two seasons. At the IRA national championship regatta, this class of seniors has played a role in winning the James Ten Eyck overall points championship all three years, while also taking home three Stewards Cups (3V8+), two Kennedy Challenge Cups (2V8+) and two Eric W. Will Trophies (V4+). Finally, members of this class rowed in an eight that won the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta in 2018, breaking the event record by five seconds.
Of course, the 2020 season will be remembered for its "what-ifs," and no one can say for certain which trophies these seniors would have brought back to Conibear Shellhouse in 2020. The good news is that their many prior accomplishments are worthy of pride and admiration – and of heartfelt gratitude. Thank you and congratulations, Husky Seniors!
