SEATTLE - Last week, the University of Washington Student-Athlete Academic Services hosted the 15th annual Dinner with a Dawg event. Nearly 200 student-athletes and 80 professionals convened in the Don James Center, the largest turnout the event has ever had.
"This was my third year at Dinner with a Dawg, and it has really changed and grown over the last couple of years," said senior women's rowing Coxswain Marley Avritt. "Every year it gets bigger and better, and this year just showed how much work the SAAS department has been putting into this event for all of the student-athletes."
The goal of Dinner with a Dawg is to provide a chance for UW student-athletes to interact with professionals and gain exposure to different fields of interest. The event serves a valuable opportunity for student-athletes to network with a diverse array of professionals in the Seattle Area while also gaining valuable advice about careers and life after college.
The SAAS department decided to adjust the presentation style this year, making it an interactive conversation by having a student-athlete serve as the moderator while a professional answers questions on stage.
"I was the one asking the questions, and Jason Hamilton was the professional answering the questions," said Avritt. "I actually got to know Jason a little bit over the summer when I conducted an informational interview with him, so this was a really good opportunity for me to talk with him again. I really liked this event presentation because as a student-athlete, I feel like I had a pretty good understanding of what the audience actually wanted to hear, and also what would keep it fun and informational."
Dinner with a Dawg was a part of a month-long effort to help Washington student-athletes focus on what happens after college. From career coaching, to interview practices, to LinkedIn workshops, the SAAS provided a wide variety of opportunities to get student-athletes prepared for their professional careers.
"I think this was the best year for Dinner with a Dawg," said Avritt. "I think it is getting better every year and I am bummed this is my last one. All of the student-athletes walked away with a better understanding of how to network and create connections, but I also think the majority of student-athletes made a few valuable connections during the event that could be very helpful in the future."
