Lynch Again Named Pac-12 Freshman Of The Week
February 25, 2020 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - For the second week in a row, Washington's Kelley Lynch has been named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Week. Lynch joins Gabbie Plain and Taran Alvelo as the only Huskies to ever earn multiple Freshman of the Week awards in their careers. Alvelo did so twice, while Plain did so a school record three times.
Lynch continued her powerful season last weekend, hitting .333/.444/.933 as the Huskies went 5-0 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Lynch hit two walkoff home runs at the tournament and now has five home runs on the season. She is just the second Husky freshman ever to hit a walkoff home run, joining Sarah Hyatt, who did so in 2003. Lynch is also the first Husky ever to hit multiple walkoff home runs in the same season. Kimberlee Souza and Ashley Charters each hit two walkoff home runs in their careers, tied with Lynch for the most by a Husky.
Just 16 games into her career, Lynch has ten extra-base hits, including five home runs. Only three Huskies (Taylor Van Zee, Kylee Lahners, Shawna Wright) have hit double-digit extra-base hits before their first Pac-12 series as freshman since the NCAA shortened softball schedules. Only seven Huskies ever have done so: Van Zee, Lahners, Wright, Kristen Rivera, Kathy Fiske, Jaime Clark, and Sara Pickering.
Lynch is one of five Huskes to hit five or more home runs before Pac-12 begins, joining Lahners, Kaitlin Inglesby, Rivera, and Clark in that regard. Lynch has already homered against three ranked teams and has eight RBI in six games against the top 25. In the circle, Lynch is 3-0, with wins over #5 Florida State and #3 Oklahoma. She has allowed two or fewer hits in five of her seven appearances.
Washington heads to the Judi Garman Classic this weekend, where it will face off with #4 LSU, #3 Texas, Fresno State, #13 Michigan, and Cal State Fullerton. All of those games will have free audio broadcasts available on GoHuskies.com. The Cal State Fullerton game will have a free video broadcast via BigWest.TV, while the other four games are available via a paid subscription to FloSoftball.
