National Athlete Of The Week Again For Gruver
February 18, 2020 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - For the second time as a Husky and the third time in her career, Olivia Gruver has won National Athlete of the Week honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The senior pole vaulter moved up to No. 2 in NCAA indoor history on Saturday and earned a bronze medal at USATF Indoor Nationals.
Gruver was the only current collegiate athlete in the field at U.S. Indoors at the ABQ Convention Center but she showed she belonged with some of the top pros in the world as she cleared her first four bars all on one attempt, going 14-3 1/4 on her first attempt, then making 14-9, 15-1, and then a new indoor career-best of 15-5. That moved Gruver from third on the NCAA all-time indoor list up to second, passing former Arkansas vaulter Lexi Jacobus.
When the bar went to the next height – 4.75m (15-7) – Gruver had a chance at tying the five-year-old collegiate record set by Demi Payne of Stephen F. Austin. Gruver gave it three good attempts, but came up short and settled for an improved collegiate lead. First and second at USAs went to World silver medalist Sandi Morris and former Olympic Champion Jenn Suhr.
Gruver won National Athlete of the Week honors last outdoor season after she broke the NCAA Outdoor record with a clearance of 15-6 1/4 (4.73m). She also won the award once while at Kentucky.
