Huskies Rebound With 4-3 Win Over Kentucky

SEATTLE --- Washington got back on the winning track on Sunday, picking up a key 4-3 win over Kentucky in the consolation final of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies improve to 5-2 with the victory while Kentucky falls to 5-2.
Washington got the match off to a great start by getting the doubles point to take an early lead. Zoey Wiel and Nika Zupancic were first off with a 6-2 win at No. 3, followed minutes later by a 6-4 win by Kat Kopcalic and Sedona Gallagher at No. 2. The match at No. 1 went unfinished with Vanessa Wong and Natsuho Arakawa leading the No. 21-ranked team of Akvile Parazinskaite and Lesedi Jacobs.
The Huskies kept the roll going with a pair of wins at the top of the lineup. Wong was first off for the second-straight day with a quick 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. That was followed by another impressive win over a ranked opponent by Arakawa, who downed No. 59 Jacobs 6-2, 6-4.
Kentucky pulled back within two in the overall match with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 doubles, leaving the match to be decided on two courts. The Wildcats would get a big win at No. 3 to even the score, but Gallagher battled her way to a tough, three-set 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 to give the Huskies the match.
In what turned out to be one of the most evenly matched of the 15 on-campus sites in the ITA Kickoff, all four matches were decided by 4-3 scores. Princeton knocked off No. 11 USC 4-3 in the championship match Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies return to the courts on Friday, hosting Portland at 4:00 p.m., then welcoming Purdue to the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. showdown with the Boilermakers.
