SEATTLE --- The University of Washington women's tennis team heads to Hawaii this week for a pair of early-season tests against Hawaii and No. 16 Florida State.
The Huskies, who are ranked No. 14 in the latest ITA rankings, opened the season with three 7-0 sweeps in two days last week, losing just one set the entire weekend. However, the stakes are raised as Washington hits the road for the first time this season.
First up, the Huskies face Hawaii on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. PT, then close out the trip with a match against No. 16 Florida State on Friday at Noon PT.
Wednesday's match against Hawaii is the first of the season for the Rainbow Wahine, who finished last year with a 10-10 recording including an impressive 6-2 mark at home. Hawaii has two players ranked in the ITA rankings in Bojana Markovic at No. 91 and Satsuki Takamura at No. 103.
Florida State, which is ranked just behind the Huskies in the national rankings, also opens the 2020 spring schedule in Hawaii against Washington. The Seminoles were 21-7 last season, reaching the NCAA Second Round before falling in an upset to UCF. This season, Florida State does not have a ranked singles player, but has the No. 14-ranked doubles team in Emmanuella Salas and Victoria Allen.
Washington's Vanessa Wong, ranked No. 102 in the ITA rankings, is 11-4 on the season and 3-0 in duals thus far including a 2-0 mark at No. 1. Overall, she has won her last five heading back to the fall portion of the season. Katarina Kopcalic, who went 3-0 at No. 3 singles and added a 3-0 mark at No. 2 doubles this past weekend, is ranked No. 88 overall after a solid fall season which saw her go 8-5 including a three-set win over Stanford's Janice Shin who was ranked No. 60 at the time.
Sophomore Sedona Gallagher has been solid through the early-going, posting a 10-4 singles record this year including going 3-0 and dropping just four total games last weekend. She has lost just one doubles match in 2019-20 when teamed with Kopcalic and that came in the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in October. The duo lost just two games in three duals last week. For her career, Gallagher is 40-4 including a 13-2 record in dual matches and if her career ended today, her .909 winning percentage in doubles play would be the best in program history with second-place coming in at .787.
