SEATTLE --- The University of Washington women's tennis team saw an impressive group of five Huskies earn qualifying spots in the 2019 ITA Women's All-American Championships. The event marks the kick-off the 2019-20 season for Washington.
The Huskies will be well represented in the field with four earning singles berths: seniors Katarina Kopcalic and Natsuho Arakawa, junior Vanessa Wong, and sophomore Sedona Gallagher. In the doubles field, Wong will partner with sophomore Nika Zupancic.
The tournament is split into three portions with Pre-Qualifying taking place at regional sites Oct. 5-6. The 12 pre-qualifiers to advance join the field at the Qualifying tournament Oct. 7-8 with the top 16 from that field earning a spot with the top 64 players in the Main Draw Oct. 9-13 at the University of Tulsa.
Wong, who was ranked No. 54 in the ITA Preseason Rankings, earned a spot in the qualifying draw, but was also on the list of alternates for the main draw (which will be finalized Oct. 1). Arakawa, Kopcalic and Gallager will compete in the pre-qualifying draw beginning Oct. 5.
On the doubles side, the team of Wong/Zupancic was ranked No. 45 in the preseason rankings and have earned a spot in the qualifying field starting Oct. 7.
Former Husky Stacey Fung has been the lone Washington player to reach the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships since 2011, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2017 and reaching the first round in 2018. Vanise Chan and Denise Dy advanced the furthest in the tournament field, reaching the semifinals in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
