Freshman Thomas Chosen For World Championships
September 11, 2019 | Cross Country, Track & Field
SEATTLE - While her fellow Husky freshmen will be arranging dorm rooms and memorizing their routes to class, standout track newbie Carley Thomas will be halfway around the world competing on track and field's biggest stage. Thomas, currently training with the Husky distance squad in Colorado Springs, has been selected to represent the Australian National Team at the 2019 IAAF World Track & Field Championships later this month in Doha, Qatar.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Thomas was the 2018 World Junior Championships silver medalist at 800-meters, and now gets to step up to the senior level just one year later. Thomas is one of three Australian women 800-meter runners heading to Doha. She was fourth at the 2019 Australian National Championships, going 2:02.74 in the final.
Thomas' summer included running on her first ever Diamond League Meet, in London, where she lowered her 800-meters PR to 2:01.01.
She will be the first current Husky track athlete ever to compete at the World Championships while enrolled at UW. Only twice before have Husky athletes competed at the World Championships during the same year they competed for Washington: Jeremy Taiwo in the decathlon for the U.S. in 2013 and Regina Joyce in the marathon for Ireland in 1983. Both Taiwo and Joyce had finished their senior seasons that spring before going on to compete at Worlds.
Thomas' first race in Doha will be on the first day of the competition, Sept. 27.
