Week 1 Soundbites: Offense Media Availability
August 28, 2019 | Football
SEATTLE – Washington football offensive players and coaches met with the media Wednesday morning ahead of the Huskies' season opener against Eastern Washington Saturday. Read some of what they had to say:
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN TREY ADAMS
(On opening the season at home compared to last year's neutral site opener) "Our fans are amazing. The atmosphere here is awesome, and we just know this field. We practice on it every day, so that's a big help. All our fans are great, so that's really on our side… It's nice that we don't have to travel and all my family gets to be here. It's a long-awaited home game, and we're super excited for that."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN NICK HARRIS
(On if the offense needs to set the tone for the team this year with the number of veterans returning) "For sure, especially up front. I think we as an offense know, up front – it starts with us just because we have so much experience up front. The energy kind of flows through us, so we can't really have bad days. We just have to come with it every day and I think that's kind of the mentality we've had this whole camp and this game week."
(On his favorite part of gameday) "Playing, and the fans. Definitely just running out and hearing the fans and the adrenaline you get running out of the tunnel. That first pop is going to be pretty cool."
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR BUSH HAMDAN
(On what Jacob Eason is like as an offensive presence) "He's been great. I think every day, he continues to grow with these guys. I think part of naming the starter was that guy getting that feel with his teammates. He's doing a good job, we're throwing a lot at him. Game management, you've seen it Week 1 in college football, we just have to settle down and take one play at a time."
(On what Eastern Washington likes to do defensively) "Really, really sound. This program has been one of the top programs for a long, long time. They certainly give you a lot of different looks – blitzing a guy from this side, popping a guy from over here. They have their base coverage – they play man coverage – really a lot of similarities to a lot of the things we do… Very sound defense, these guys have been good for a long time. It's going to be a good challenge."
WIDE RECEIVER AARON FULLER
(On what Jacob Eason's arm strength means to his play at wide receiver) "It means that he's going to try and fit it in tight windows. You have to make those tough catches, whether it's across the middle in a slant, dig, or post, he's going to try and laser it in there. It's going to get on you fast, so you have to be prepared for it and be ready to run because you'll have a lot of space based on how fast he throws it in there… I think it's always good to be precise [with your routes], whether you have a quarterback with a strong arm or not, knowing that you're going to be in the right spot at the right time. As long as they know that, they're going to put the ball in there and you have to make the play happen."
RUNNING BACK SALVON AHMED
(On what he has improved on during his time at Washington) "Overall, I think my whole game has improved but I think that came with maturity, just maturing in the game and getting to know football. Knowing how to read defenses, knowing how the offensive line works, knowing what holes to hit in short yardage to get the first down… I think my mindset has matured and helped me better my game."
(On what Eastern Washington does well defensively) "They run to the ball well. They have a good secondary, a new secondary. A lot of their guys graduated, but I think they are just a good, sound team. They run to the ball and they play good defense. Like I said, they are a contender for a national championship every year, so you know they are going to come out there and give us their best shot."
