Successful First Day For Huskies At World Championships
August 25, 2019 | Men's Rowing
The first day of the 2019 World Rowing Championships resulted mostly in success for the 10 current and former Washington rowers who were in action.
As far as UW athletes were concerned, the first day of the regatta, on the Danube River in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria, featured heats in the men's and women's pair, the men's and women's four and the para-rowing mixed four with coxswain. The remaining 10 Huskies at the World Championships will get their competitions underway in the coming days.
In the men's and women's pairs heats, the top four in each five- or six-boat heat earned a spot in the quarterfinals, with the remaining crews having to race in a repachage before the quarters.
All three Huskies in the women's heats were successful. The United States pair, with veteran international rower Megan Kalmoe and coached by UW head women's coach Yasmin Farooq, won its heat, coming from third place at the halfway mark for the win. In another heat, the German/UW pair of Calina Schanze and Tabea Schendekehl took third place, moving them through to the quarters.
Two of the three Huskies in the men's pair moved straight to the quarterfinals. In heat one, American Ezra Carlson finished fourth, while in heat four, Canadian Conlin McCabe took second place, moving those two through. In the third heat, 2019 grad Michiel Mantel and his Dutch partner finished in fifth, so they'll race in a repechage tomorrow.
In the para-rowing PR3 mixed four with coxswain heats, veteran U.S. rower Danielle Hansen, a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, finished first in her heat, leading from wire to wire to beat a crew from Israel by about four seconds. The U.S. team advanced directly to an A/B semifinal on Thursday, needing a top-three finish in that race to move on to the A final.
In the women's fours heats, only the top-two finishers in each heat qualified for the A/B semis, with all other finishers moving on to a repechage. In the women's heats, two UW rowers raced in the same heat: senior Valentina Iseppi for Italy and alumna Phoebe Spoors for New Zealand. Those two finished in fourth and fifth place in their heat, placing them in Tuesday repechages.
In the men's four, where only the top finisher in each heat moved straight to the semis, Serbian Viktor Pivac finished in fifth place in his heat. He'll row in a repechage on Tuesday.
Monday will be a quiet day in terms of Huskies competing. Along with Mantel's repechage in the men's pair, the only other UW athlete in action will be sophomore-to-be Dimitra Tsamopoulou, who will race for Greece in a women's double sculls heat. Tsamopoulou won the W2x gold medal earlier this summer at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships
