2019 Fall Camp Soundbites: Day 17
August 20, 2019 | Football
SEATTLE – Members of the Washington football team met with the media Tuesday afternoon following the Huskies' 17th practice of fall camp. Read some of what they had to say.
RUNNING BACK SEAN MCGREW
(On whether or not he can feel like kickoff is getting closer) "Definitely. You kind of lose track of days when you're in fall camp. I don't even know what day it is right now [laughs]. I know we're getting close to the end, but we're excited and we've definitely picked up the energy and are trying to finish fall camp strong going into game week with as much energy as we can."
(On the challenge of maintaining a high energy level throughout fall camp) "It's definitely tough. Everyone always comes out with a lot of energy for the first week, and then you start hitting those grinding practices and people start getting sore and tired… I think we, as a team, try and improve every day. We all pick each other up, and we're trying to make this the best team possible. As a running back group, we all try to influence that on the rest of the team… We just try and bring as much energy as we can and influence the team with our energy."
WIDE RECEIVER CHICO MCCLATCHER
(On practicing while the band is practicing and crowd noise is being played over the speakers) "Definitely. It's going to be a lot louder, so having the sound out there in practice really helps us. It's going to help us during road games. It's good to have that distraction when we're on the field. It just makes us communicate better and use verbal combat like our coaches stress."
(On the maturation of the Huskies' younger wide receivers during fall camp) "As camp goes on, there's going to be a lot thrown at us. New plays, different looks from defenses, everything. Fall camp goes by fast, and the young guys are stepping their game up, but there's going to be a lot more coming. I have faith we'll be ready for that."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN NICK HARRIS
(On the hot weather and humidity during today's practice) "It's toward the end of camp, everybody is sore, everybody is getting banged up a little bit. This is definitely that day, get-in-shape weather. Sweating a little bit more than usual."
(On his approach to maintaining a high energy level during fall camp) "I just try and tell everybody we have an opportunity to get better today. If there's one thing that you need to focus on to get better, focus on that one thing and don't try and do too much… That's kind of my mode going into it."
WIDE RECEIVERS COACH JUNIOR ADAMS
(On the progression of the Huskies' young wide receivers) "It starts with the older guys. It starts with Aaron Fuller, Andre Baccellia, Quinten Pounds, and Chico McClatcher. I think those guys set the bar, they set the standard. They are good walking examples so guys have someone to look up to in that room. Austin [Osborne], [Marquis] Spiker, a freshman like Puka [Nacua], those guys are scratching and clawing to get reps and to go out there and compete. Each day, they are coming out there and making plays. Each day in meetings, they are taking really good notes. They're being deliberate with their practice reps and it's showing up on the practice field."
