2019 Fall Camp Soundbites: Day 9
August 11, 2019 | Football
SEATTLE – Washington football head coach Chris Petersen and select players met with the media Sunday afternoon following the Huskies' ninth practice of fall camp. Read some of what they had to say.
HEAD COACH CHRIS PETERSEN
(On the team's progression at this point in fall camp) "I really like the energy, I really like the hustle. They are working their tails off. I think we're growing every day, I really do. We're still making too many mistakes. I think that's probably par for the course, but we're not really looking for par, though. I know the golfers are, but we're not. We're making progress, we are. As long as we can clean up the mistakes and not keep stumbling over ourselves with the same mistakes days in a row and keep this attitude and this work ethic, I really like it."
(On the competition at the quarterback position) "I think [the battle] has been going great. I wish I could feel that intensity at every position. I think it's awesome. I think we all love competition in life. I wish most people had that in their job every day, they had to come in and compete like that. You'd watch some guys improve in a hurry. I think it's been awesome."
(On the running backs and how they complement each other) "We know we need multiple running backs to make this thing work. One guy can't do it, it's too physical of a position. We have to get a lot of guys in the game, and that's a good competition, as well. I really like that competition, as well. Salvon [Ahmed] has been here as long as anyone and a couple other guys have been here about the same. He's probably got a lead on it, but there are a lot of other guys who are in the mix and that thing is never done. That's a hard one for practice because we don't tackle very much and you have to see what they can really do in scrimmages, which there isn't going to be a bunch of scrimmages, so we come to the games. Guys have to keep chipping away and be ready for their time and when it's their time to go, they have to break tackles and fall forward. Those are the things we're looking for."
QUARTERBACK JAKE HAENER
(On making the simple plays and taking care of the football) "You can't go broke taking a profit. Bush [Hamdan] tries to emphasize that. We sat down the other day and talked about managing turnovers and knowing when to, in the red zone, if you want to take a chance, it's either a touchdown or its nobody else's ball. Just need to learn from that, and I'm still a redshirt sophomore, played in two or three games in my life, so you have to still learn and take what's there and keep growing."
(On having to fight the urge to try and make every big play) "You do, but as you mature, you're going to understand that the quarterback position is about making the smarter throws and it's also about the throws you don't make. That's what Bush tries to tell me. Just learning from it and growing from it. I'm still trying to learn and improve every day and get with these guys and just keep learning."
QUARTERBACK JACOB EASON
(On his growth as a quarterback) "I'll always be the same quarterback… I'm just focused on improving every day, just the little things and being consistent in my decision making. I'm not really focused on the past or the future, I'm just trying to stay consistent and focus on each and every day."
