Washington Earns ITA All-Academic Team Honors; Five Named Scholar-Athletes
July 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- The University of Washington women's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors after posting a 3.41 team GPA during the 2018-19 academic year as announced by the organization on Thursday. In addition, five Huskies were named ITA Scholar-Athletics with GPAs of better than 3.50 this past year.
Washington has earned ITA All-Academic Team honors in each of the five seasons under the direction of Head Coach Robin Stephenson, earning a 3.20 team GPA or higher in each season.
Individually, five Huskies were named ITA scholar-athletes after earning a 3.50 GPA for the current academic year: junior Natsuho Arakawa (French major, 3.52 cumulative GPA), freshman Sedona Gallagher (Undeclared, 3.85 GPA), junior Katarina Kopcalic (Psychology, 3.72 GPA), freshman Zoey Weil (Undeclared, 3.78 GPA) and sophomore Vanessa Wong (Undeclared, 3.81 GPA).
"Every person on our team works so hard in everything that they do and it's amazing to see them recognized for their efforts," said Stephenson. "They truly embody what it means to be a student-athlete here at UW and are committed to being their best on and off the court and out in the community. They are all incredibly driven in the classroom and have great ambition for their future whenever their tennis careers come to a close. Not many people get to see the dedication, sacrifice and work ethic that it takes to excel the way they do, but it is a huge privilege for our staff to be part of their journey and to see what they're able to accomplish."
Washington finished the 2018-19 season with its best winning percentage in program history after posting a 21-5 record, earning Stephenson Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. The Huskies reached the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time since 2009 after hosting the first two rounds of the tournament for the first time in 15 years.
