Huskies Garner Numerous Honors From CRCA
June 30, 2019 | Women's Rowing
Washington was well-represented on the first round of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association's 2019 postseason honors. UW head coach Yasmin Farooq was named Region 5 Coach of the Year while 10 Huskies earned All-America and/or Scholar-Athlete honors.
Five UW rowers earned All-America honors, four on the first team and one more on the second. Sophomore Sofia Asoumanaki, junior Tabea Schendekehl, and seniors Marlee Blue and Marley Avritt made the first team while senior Calina Schanze earned a spot on the second team.
Blue and Schendekehl were honored for the second year in a row as both also earned first-team All-America in 2018.
Five Huskies were named 2019 Scholar-Athletes by the CRCA: Schendekehl, senior Amanda Durkin, junior Carmela Pappalardo, junior Lark Skov and senior Jennifer Wren.
Wren was named a Scholar-Athlete for the third year in a row while both Pappalardo and Durkin earned a place on the list for the second time (Pappalardo made it last year and Durkin was listed in 2017).
The Huskies won their second NCAA Championship in the last three seasons (and their fifth ever) this spring, sweeping all three grand finals for just the second time ever (the Huskies also swept in 2017).
Farooq earned CRCA West Region Coach of the Year for the third time, also having won it in 2009 (at Stanford) and 2017. Both of those seasons, she also went on to earn national Coach of the Year.
In the coming week or so, the CRCA will also announce its national Coach of the Year and Staff of the Year awards.
