Eight Huskies Earn Medals At World Cup II
June 23, 2019 | Women's Rowing
Eight former UW rowers earned medals Sunday on the final day of the World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland.
Huskies earned medals in five different race categories. In all, 17 current and former UW athletes competed in the three-day regatta, the second of three World Cup events this summer, leading up to the 2019 World Rowing Championships, Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Austria.
The 2018 Pac-12 Rower of the Year, Brooke Mooney '18, made her debut in the U.S. women's eight and helped the Americans to a silver-medal finish in the A final, alongside veteran coxswain Katelin Guregian '09. Australia led from wire-to-wire and won the event.
Two other former UW rowers raced in the women's eight A final. Fiona Gammond '15 rowed in the bow seat for the Great Britain crew that won the bronze while Kirstyn Goodger '14 was in the New Zealand shell that finished in fourth place.
The U.S. had two entries in the women's four, with two Huskies – Brooke Pierson '18 and Jessica Thoennes '18 – rowing together in one of those two boats. That boat finished fifth in its A final, one spot behind the other American crew. In the women's four B final, Phoebe Spoors '16 and her New Zealand crew, finished in third place.
Longtime U.S. rower Megan Kalmoe '06 earned a bronze medal in the women's pair along with partner Tracy Eisser. In the women's pair B final, Huskies Calina Schanze '19 and Tabea Schendekehl '20 teamed up for Germany and finished in second place.
UW senior Valentina Iseppi '20 rowed in one of two Italian entries in the women's double sculls, and finished in sixth place in the B final.
Washington had two medal winners in the men's eight. Jacob Dawson '16 rowed in the five seat for the Great Britain crew that finished in second place behind the powerful German boat. Will Crothers '09 earned the bronze medal as the stroke seat for the Canadian eight.
Danielle Hansen, a 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the para-rowing PR3 mixed four and a 2018 World Champion in the pair, won gold in the mixed four Sunday, overcoming the Italian crew in the second 500 to win.
Another veteran Canadian rower, Conlin McCabe '11, won the bronze in the men's pair, rowing in that event for the first time in nearly a decade. UW sophomore-to-be Mattjis Holler '22 also competed in the men's pair competition, but didn't start in his final.
Additionally, Serbian Viktor Pivac '18 finished in fifth in the men's four C final.
