Huskies Sweep ASU, Advance To Semifinals

OJAI, Calif. – The 11th ranked Washington women's tennis team swept Arizona State 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Championships on Thursday afternoon. The Huskies will face No. 2 seed UCLA in the semifinals on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
The defeat of the Sun Devils was the second conference match sweep for UW and the sixth overall.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning a hard fought doubles point. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kenadi Hance and junior Natsuho Arakawa defeated Savannah Slaysman and Tereza Kolarova 6-3. The Sun Devils won 6-3 on Court 2, as sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil lost 6-3 to Sammi Hampton and Samantha Alicea.
The doubles point would be decided at No. 1 doubles as the 29th ranked doubles pair of Stacey Fung and Nika Zupanic defeated the nation's top-ranked doubles team of Lauryn John-Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh 7-6 (7-5). Fung and Zupancic now stand at 12-6 in dual matches.
As singles play began, the Huskies did not look back, winning three singles matches with relative ease. Arakawa defeated Hampton at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-5 to extend the Washington lead to 2-0. With the victory, Arakawa improved her singles dual record to 13-4 and 7-2 in Pac-12 play.
Shortly after, Wong made it a 3-0 UW lead as she took down 103rd ranked John-Baptiste 6-3, 6-4. Wong's record now stands at 17-4 in dual matches and 7-4 in conference action.
Zupancic clinched the match on Court 6 as she beat Alicea 6-3, 7-6. Zupancic remained perfect in Pac-12 matches, as she is now 7-0 and 11-1 in dual matches.
Fung's match at No. 1 singles against Hattingh went unfinished. Fung was leading 4-6, 6-1, 3-0 at the time of the completed match. Junior Katarina Kopcalic was down 6-7, 4-3 and Gallagher lead 3-6, 6-4, 4-2 when the match was completed.
The Huskies previously lost to UCLA, 4-1, on April 14 this season. It was only the second conference loss and the third overall for UW.
