Washington offensive lineman Kaleb McGary was selected Thursday by the Atlanta Falcons with 31st selection of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Â
McGary, from Fife, Wash., spent five seasons at Washington, beginning his career as a defensive lineman. After redshirting the 2014 season, he played in 12 games (starting six) as a redshirt freshman in 2015. He went on to start all 41 games over his last three seasons, helping the Huskies to Pac-12 Conference titles in 2016 and 2018, along with a College Football Playoff berth in 2016.
Â
As a senior, McGary won the Morris Trophy, given to the Pac-12's top offensive lineman (as voted by opponent defensive linemen). He was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection at right tackle in both 2017 and 2018.
Â
McGary is the first UW offensive lineman selected in the NFL Draft since 2012, when Senio Kelemete was chosen in the fifth round. He's the first UW o-lineman to go in the first round since Lincoln Kennedy was drafted by the Falcons with the ninth pick of the 1993 Draft.
Â
The Huskies have produced a first-round draft pick in the last three drtafts (John Ross in 2017 and Vita Vea in 2018) and in five of the last nine. McGary is the sixth first-round selection under current UW head coach Chris Petersen.
