April 15, 2019 | Softball
SEATTLE - Washington senior Taran Alvelo was drafted eighth overall in the National Pro Fastpitch draft, selected by the Aussie Peppers. Alvelo, who leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts this season, was a second-round pick.
Alvelo is 18-4 this season with a 1.93 ERA and is fourth among active pitchers in the NCAA in both strikeouts and wins. She earned her first All-American honors after the 2018 season and was named to USA Softball's Preseason Collegiate Player of the Year watch list this season. She has earned All-Pac-12 and NFCA All-Region honors every year of her career and was the Pac-12 Co-Freshman of the Year in 2016.
Alvelo has won 94 games in her career, the fourth-most in Washington history. Her 789 career strikeouts are fourth in Husky history. With six more strikeouts, Alvelo would have her third consecutive season with 200 more more strikeouts. She would be the first pitcher in the Pac-12 and the fifth pitcher in the country to record 200 strikeouts this year.
A member of the Puerto Rican National Team, Alvelo is Washington's second NPF draft pick in the last three years, joining Ali Aguilar in that regard.
