STANFORD, Calif. – The Washington men's golf team is in first place after the first round of The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course. The Huskies shot a 2-under round of 278 on Thursday and have a one stroke lead over second place Stanford. Only UW and Stanford shot under par out of the 26 teams in the field.
"Really happy with our round this morning," said head coach Alan Murray. "The course was playing tough with long rough. The guys battled very well today. We didn't have our best our best stuff by any stretch but we really did display our grit and determination in a fine way and bounced back from bad breaks."
Sophomore Noah Woolsey led the way with a 2-under round of 68 which puts him in a tie for fourth place after the first round. Woolsey carded four birdies and his only blemish on the scorecard was a double bogey on the ninth hole.
Sophomore Jan Schneider also posted a round of 68, and he is tied for fourth a 2-under par. Schneider played steady golf with only two bogeys and four birdies on the day.
Junior Henry Lee shot an even par 70, and he is tied for 11th heading into the second round of play.
Freshman Paul Margolis is tied for 37th after the first round as he carded a 2-over round of 72.
Senior William Mansfield posted a 4-over 74, and is tied for 52nd place.
The Huskies posted the most pars on the first round with 62, while also recording 14 birdies.
"I think we will take a lot of confidence from today's round and know we don't necessarily need our best to do what's most important, score well," continued Murray. "I am proud and pleased for the guys as they have been grinding and working on their games. It's nice to get a day where it shows that they are headed in the right direction."
The Dawgs will tee off second round play beginning at 12:25 p.m. on Friday, playing alongside San Jose State and Colorado.
