February 10, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- The Washington women's tennis team defeated No. 14 NC State 4-3 in a consolation match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday night. It was the Huskies first victory against a ranked opponent on the year, and it improved UW's record to 6-1.
"It was a great team win tonight against a very tough NC State team," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "The girls have been working really hard and doing all of the little things extremely well and it's great to see them rewarded for that. I was very impressed with our doubles tonight, we have worked hard on it and we needed that point tonight."
Washington got off to a strong start as the Dawgs won all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
Senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic beat Anna Rogers and Alana Smith 6-3 for the first doubles victory. Fung and Zupancic improved their record to 4-0 in dual doubles matches.
Next, senior Kenadi Hance and freshman Sedona Gallagher took down Bianca Moldovan and Liz Norman 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for UW.
Sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil defeated Andrea Reami and Amanda Rebol 6-3 for the third doubles victory of the match.
The Huskies quickly turned the 1-0 lead to a two-point advantage as Wong beat Smith in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Wong is now 6-0 in dual singles matches, playing in the second spot in the lineup.
The Wolfpack got on the board next as Reami beat 87th ranked junior Katarina Kopcalic 6-4, 6-0.
Gallagher kept her dual singles record a perfect 4-0 as she beat Moldovan 6-4, 6-2 to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
Fung then fell to 25th ranked Rogers 4-6, 3-6 as NC State reduced the UW lead to 3-2.
Shortly after on Court 4, Norman defeated Hance 6-3, 6-4 as the match was all squared up at three points a side. The match would be decided on Court 6 to determine a winner.
Freshman Nika Zupancic battled through the second set to beat Rebol 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the fourth point and the victory for the Huskies.
"Any win at this event is fantastic and we are very happy to be ending the weekend this way," continued Stephenson. "We still have a lot to improve and our best tennis is definitely ahead of us. This was a great step in the right direction for us."
Washington will next be in action on Feb. 19 at home to face Gonzaga at 5 p.m.
