Las Vegas Bowl Soundbites: Press Conference
December 20, 2019 | Football
LAS VEGAS β Washington football head coach Chris Petersen and seniors Nick Harris and Myles Bryant participated in a press conference on Friday morning, Dec. 20, ahead of the Huskies' appearance in the 2019 Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl tomorrow, Dec. 21. Read some of what they had to say:
HEAD COACH CHRIS PETERSEN
(Opening statement) "I'd like to thank everybody from John Saccenti on down that had to do with this bowl game. It's an awesome game to come to. I think if you talk to the coaches and the players, everybody gets excited when they get to come to [Las Vegas]β¦ From the things we get to do, to the opponent we get to play, to the date of the game. Trust me, every coach and player is jumping up and down about the date of this game, that you actually get to have Christmas. We're on the quarter system, so these guys go back to school really quickly, and when you play in late bowl games like we've been playing in, there's not much time off. The whole thing is really good for us and for our guys. We've enjoyed our time here like we always do and we're excited to play a really good team."
(On whether the last couple of weeks have been awkward in terms of preparing for his last game as head coach) "It hasn't been awkward. We have awesome guys. One of the things we always talk to our guys about is you finish what you start. You have to announce these things with a certain timetable or it's not fair to recruits, but we're all in this together⦠This is the 2019 Husky team that will never be together again after two days and these kids have given their heart and soul to this season. No matter what the record is, they've been all in from start to finish. They've practiced hard, they've fought hard, and it's an awesome group to be around. I knew it wouldn't be awkward or anything like that. It actually worked out fine. [The assistant coaches] went out and recruited and I stayed back and made sure that practices were ready to go."
(On what he's most proud of during his career) "Not any one thing. I think we've always tried to do it as right as we could in terms of having the players in mind. I think we've always had really good coaches surrounding our programs. I think a lot of guys talk a good game about trying to take care of the kids and do right by them, but I think our staffs have always really tried to keep that in the forefront and make this thing more than just football. We love football, it's all about winning [tomorrow's game], but it can't just be all about football in your program. I think we've always really focused on the right things, and that's something I'm pleased with."
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN NICK HARRIS
(On how his experience has been in Las Vegas) "Our time here has been great and we've been accommodated by everyone pretty well. The events we've had have been filled with fun and all the guys are having a great time, but at the end of the day, we came here to play a football game. We have to stay locked in and make sure we're ready to play and execute on Saturday."
DEFENSIVE BACK MYLES BRYANT
(On what stands out about Boise State's offense on film) "They have a bunch of shifts and motions, they have explosive playmakers on the outside, and they have a quarterback who can run and throw the ball as well as a running back who is pretty tough. The offensive line is good, the tight ends are good. Just all over the board, they are a good offense."
