Week 9 Soundbites: Defense Media Availability
October 29, 2019 | Football
SEATTLE – Members of the Washington football defense met with the media Tuesday morning following the Huskies' latest practice. Read some of what they had to say:
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JIMMY LAKE
(On the challenges Utah's offense presents) "When you have a good running game, that's going to open up the passing game. You can tell [Utah quarterback] Tyler Huntley has done a nice job in his reads and he's throwing the ball as best as I've seen him throw it. That's why they're one of the best teams in the Pac-12 right now. They are running the ball, throwing it well, and have a quarterback that can hurt you with his legs, which is always a problem."
(On what the staff reviewed during the off week) "We definitely had a good chance to review the good, the bad, the ugly, what we have to improve on, and what we're doing really well that offenses are seeing that now we have to tweak a little bit. We're always constantly trying to look at ourselves and what teams will try and game plan against, and then look at our personnel and what guys fit best in which positions."
DEFENSIVE LINE COACH IKAIKA MALLOE
(On whether the team is recharged after the off week) "I think they did a great job on the bye week in terms of getting healthy, getting extra treatment, and keeping their bodies fresh because it's going to be a really physical game coming up on Saturday."
(On the keys against Utah's offensive line) "The first thing is being physical and trying to control the line of scrimmage, getting off of blocks, and then tackling the leading running back in our league. That guy is not only physical but he's elusive, as well, and does a great job breaking tackles. We have our work cut out up front."
LINEBACKER ARIEL NGATA
(On Utah's offensive line) "Their offensive line is really good, really big – just really strong dudes. We're going to have to be physical, be fast, and tackle the ball carrier."
(On the difference the Husky Stadium crowd can make) "The crowd can do a lot. People don't know how much the crowd can make a difference, just being loud all game really throws the other team off. You can see them getting false start penalties and everything. The crowd is a huge factor, especially with a top-10 team coming in here. It really puts the pressure on the other team."
DEFENSIVE BACK ELIJAH MOLDEN
(On what the Husky defense needs to do to stop Utah) "They are a good offensive team, for sure. We have to be physical, stop the run, and take away the first option for their quarterback."
