SEATTLE -Β The Seattle Sports Commission (SSC) has officially published the list of nominees for the 84thAnnual MTRWestern Sports Star of the Year as two Huskies have been nominated. Ben-Burr Kirven of football was nominated as the Male Sports Star of the Year while Sis Bates of softball was nominated for the Female Sports Star of the Year.Β
Senior Linebacker Ben-Burr Kirven was a force in the middle of the Husky defense leading the nation in tackles with 176. Burr-Kirven was named the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year as well as being honored for his work in the classroom as the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Associated Press, Football Writers Association and ESPN named Burr-Kirven a First-Team All-American while The Sporting News, Walter Camp and American Football Coaches Association named him a Second-Team All-American for his impressive 2018 campaign.Β
"It's honor to be nominated for such an amazing award," said Burr-Kirven. "I'm so proud to have gotten to play for UW for the last four years. Seattle is an incredible sports town. The support me and my teammates have gotten over the years has been incredible."
Sis Bates ascended into the pantheon of Washington's All-Americans in 2018, earning her way onto the All-American First Team and helping the Huskies finish second in the nation. She was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Year for her work at shortstop, becoming just the third Husky ever to earn that award. After just two years at Washington, Bates has already recorded 141 hits, including 75 hits in just 62 games last year. Bates began the year on a 15-game hitting streak, the longest by a Husky in the last three years, and went consecutive games without a hit just five times all year. Her .363 career batting average is the eighth-highest in Husky history, and only one other player in program history has as many hits in less than 130 career games.
Created by Royal Brougham and the Seattle P-I in 1936, the Sports Star has celebrated the achievements of Washington sports for nine decades. The event will take place on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. The event features a pre-show reception and silent auction where guests are invited to mingle and bid with the Seattle sports community.
