Huskies Sweep Doubleheader Against Eastern Washington And Seattle U

SEATTLE --- The Washington women's tennis team improved to 4-0 on the season after winning a pair of matches on Sunday at Nordstrom Tennis Center. In the first match of the day the Huskies swept Eastern Washington 7-0, then continued their strong play into the afternoon defeating Seattle U 7-0.
"I think we started the year off really well," said head coach Robin Stephenson. "The girls are doing a great job. It's tough playing two matches in one day but we accomplished some goals. We wanted to come out and work on some things, focusing on what we're trying to do and improving every day. I thought the girls did a really good job of that."
On the day, the Huskies won five doubles matches and all twelve singles matches, while only losing one set out of two overall matches.
In the morning match against Eastern Washington the Dawgs earned the doubles point in a quick manner. Sophomore Vanessa Wong and senior Kenadi Hance swept their opponents Faye Worrall and Zoey Nelson 6-0. Then the freshman tandem of Delara Zamani and Sedona Gallagher took down Marta Heinen and Yasmin Mansouri 6-1 to earn the first point for the Huskies. Senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic were leading 5-3 over Madeline Lamoreaux and Rylee Braeden when the doubles point was decided.
In singles play, Hance made quick work of her match, beating Stephanie Broussard 6-0, 6-1 to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Wong won her match 6-3, 6-2 over Rylee Braeden to extend the Husky lead to 3-0.
Fung then clinched the fourth point and a Washington victory by defeating Lamoreaux 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Sedona Gallagher was the next Husky to win her match, by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Junior Natsuho Arakawa then defeated Faye Worrall 6-4, 6-4 to earn the sixth point for UW. Junior Kat Kopcalic's match went to three sets, but Kopcalic prevailed over Zoey Nelson winning 6-0, 2-6, 6-2.
In the second match of the doubleheader against Seattle U, the Huskies did not miss a beat, winning all three doubles matches as well as sweeping the singles matches once again.
The Husky doubles lineup remained the same as Zamani and Gallagher got the first victory by beating Martina Ascuito and Hannah Grossman 6-2. With the win, Zamani and Gallagher improved their record as a duo to 4-0.
The doubles point was clinched by Fung and Zupancic as they defeated Hannah Gianan and Kyra Jung 6-3 to put the Huskies up 1-0. Fung and Zupancic are now 11-2 together on the season and 3-0 in dual matches.
In the final doubles matchup Wong and Hance were victorious 6-4 over Lily-Ana Kreutzer and Jillian Rasmussen. With the victory, Wong and Hance earned their third dual match win of the season together.
In singles play, the Huskies were dominant throughout all six singles matches, only allowing Seattle U to only win as many as two games in any set.
Arakawa got things started with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ascuito to extend the Husky lead to 2-0. Arakawa improved her record to 4-0 in dual matches on the year and 13-3 overall. Hance was dominant in her match against Jillian Rasmussen sweeping both sets 6-0, 6-0. Hance is now 3-1 in dual matches playing in the fourth spot the lineup and 15-4 overall.
Sophomore Vanessa Wong beat Jung 6-1, 6-1 to earn the fourth point for the Dawgs and clinching the overall match victory. With Wong's victory, she is now 11-4 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in dual matches, playing in the second spot in the lineup.
The next Husky to earn their singles victory was Kopcalic who beat Sabotic 6-1, 6-2. Kopcalic improved her overall record to 17-2 and 4-0 in dual matches. Kopcalic's 17 singles victories lead the team.
Freshman Nika Zupanaic, who played in the sixth spot in the lineup defeated Kreutzer 6-1, 6-1. The victory was Zupancic's first career dual singles win. The Huskies seventh point was won by Fung who beat Gianan 6-0, 6-1. Fung is now 9-4 on the season and 3-0 in dual matches, playing in the top spot of the lineup.
The Huskies will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 1 when Washington hosts Idaho and Portland State.
