2018 World Championships Wrap Up International Season
September 06, 2018 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
The international rowing season wraps up this coming week with the biggest event of the summer, the 2018 World Rowing Championships, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. And is always the case, UW Rowing will be well represented.
While Husky rowers return to campus for the start of workouts – and, at the end of the month, the fall academic quarter –some of their teammates will by vying for world titles in Bulgaria's second city.
In all, seven current UW undergraduates will compete, along with a number of alumni. Huskies will represent seven different countries in eight different men's and women's competitions.
In terms of current Husky rowers, the highlight of the World Championships, which start on Sunday, Sept. 9, and wrap up the following Sunday, Sept. 16, may the women's double sculls as three current Huskies, each of whom will return for the coming college season, will square off again.
Anna Thornton '19 will row for Great Britain, having won the double sculls competitions at both the 2018 Henley Royal Regatta and this summer's Under-23 World Championships. As she did at Under-23s, she'll once again race against two Washington teammates, Valentina Iseppi '20 of Italy and Sofia Asoumanaki '21 of Greece. Both of those two competed in the 2018 Under-23s as well as the European Championships in Scotland.
Another Italian Husky, Carmela Pappalardo '20, will row in the quad sculls, in the same shell as recently graduated Chiara Ondoli '18. Two other former Huskies will compete in the women's eight: Fiona Gammond '15 (Great Britain) and veteran U.S. coxswain Katelin (Snyder) Guregian '09, who was on the UW men's team. Phoebe Spoors '16 will row for New Zealand in the women's straight four.
Also competing for the United States is Danielle Hansen '16, who will row in the para-rowing women's pair (PR3 W2-), along with longtime U.S. teammate Jaclyn Smith. Both were part of a mixed 4+ that won silver at both the 2017 Worlds and the 2016 Paralympic Games.
Three current Washington rowers will see action in men's events.
Ben Davison '19 will row for the United States in the men's double sculls, wrapping up a busy summer that included competing at both Under-23s and at the World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Bram Schwarz '20 will compete for the Netherlands in the men's coxless four. Among those he could face for a medal is Jacob Dawson' 16, the former UW captain who will row in the Great Britain four.
Another Dutchman and current UW undergrad, Simon van Dorp '20, will row for his country in the men's eight. Veteran Canadian Conlin McCabe '11, will also row in the men's eight. A 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the eight, McCabe returns to that competition having spent last season as a sculler.
In addition to all of those competitors, two UW alumnae will travel to Bulgaria as alternates: Jessica Thoennes '18 for the United States and Kirstyn Goodger '14 for New Zealand.
