Ten Reasons to Attend Sunday's Match vs Seattle
September 22, 2018 | Men's Soccer
The University of Washington Men's Soccer team hosts cross-town rival Seattle U on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium. Are you on the fence about going to the match? Here are 10 reasons why you should attend:
1 – The UW/Seattle U Rivalry
The series between these two schools goes back to 1967 with the teams playing each other at least once from 1967-1988. Seattle U spent time in the NAIA and NCAA Division II ranks, so the rivalry cooled off as the teams played just twice from 1989-2008. But since the Redhawks return to DI, the teams have again played at least once a year since 2009. Washington leads the all-time series 44-7-5 including a 8-2-1 mark since Seattle U's return to DI. The Huskies saw a 21-match home undefeated streak come to an end last year as the Redhawks won at UW for the first time since 1971.
2 – Revenge
Speaking of that streak-ending win by Seattle U: The Redhawks picked up a surprising 3-2 overtime victory over the Huskies when the two met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Husky Soccer Stadium last November. It would be hard to imagine the Huskies don't want to give the Redhawks a little payback. In that match, Washington scored first but trailed 2-1 late in the contest. The Huskies would answer back with a goal to tie the match only to see Seattle U net the match-winner eight minutes into the extra period.
3 – The WAC/101 Club Cup
Sunday's match will be the Third Annual contest for the WAC/101 Club Cup, presented to the winner of the Seattle Derby. The Huskies have won the cup in each of the last two years, winning 2-1 at UW in 2016 and taking last year's contest 2-0 at Seattle U. For more information on the cup, check out the story from earlier this week.
4 – UW is ranked #16 and off to a strong start
The Huskies have been impressive through seven matches this year, posting a 5-2-0 record with their two losses being one-goal defeats on the road to teams currently ranked in the top 15. Washington has scored at least two goals in six of its seven matches and has posted four shutouts---and that is without having its normal starters play together in any match so far. The Huskies are ranked No. 16 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll and have been in the Top 25 in each poll so far this season.
5 – Home-Field Advantage
Washington is a perfect 3-0-0 through its first three home matches this year and is an impressive 56-16-5 at home in eight seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark. Against Seattle U, the numbers are even better with the Huskies posting a 24-3-1 overall record against their cross-town rivals. Since 1972, Washington is 20-1-1 against Seattle U including a 5-1-0 record since the Redhawks returned to the NCAA Division I ranks in 2009.
6 – March to the Match
The Washington supporters are hosting a March to the Match prior to Sunday's contest. Fans can meet at the Northeast Corner of Husky Stadium and march through campus to the match, shouting their support for the Huskies along the way! The march begins at 3:45 and should arrive at the field around 4:00.
7 – The Offense is Clicking
Washington's offense has tallied 13 goals through seven matches this year, recording at least two in six of its seven matches thus far. Seniors Kyle Coffee and Scott Menzies have each scored four goals with junior Joey Parish adding three goals and three assists. A total of 11 Huskies have recorded at least a point with five different players scoring goals. The Huskies 1.86 goals per game average leads the Pac-12 and 6.14 points per game average is 25th-best in the NCAA.
8 – So is the Defense
Don't forget about the defense! The Washington defense has been impressive this season, allowing just five goals and posting four shutouts through seven matches. The team's shutout percentage of .571 is second-best in the Pac-12 and 19th-best in the NCAA overall. The Huskies haven't just held teams from scoring, but have held teams from taking many shots at all. Washington has allowed just 16 total shots on goal through seven matches (2.29 per match) and 60 shots overall. Freshman Ethan Bartlow is the only field player to play in all 642 minutes this year, helping anchor the Huskies' back line with senior captain Quentin Pearson.
9 – Dawg Pack Appreciation
Sunday's match is Dawg Pack Appreciation night to help welcome students back on campus. Washington Athletics will host various Dawg Pack events in conjunction with the match. Dawg Pack members can pick up a Dawg Pack T-shirt (for students with Dawg Pack tickets), participate in the Dawg Pack tailgate, take part in halftime raffles contest for an Echo Dot and Husky Team Store Prize Pack, halftime bubble soccer, a performance by the UW Drumline and more! Admission to the men's soccer match is free to all students with a valid Husky card.
10 – This Rivalry Atmosphere
When the team's met last year, the atmosphere was wild! In fact, two of the three largest crowds in Husky Soccer Stadium history have come against Seattle U including a record 3,419 fans in 2016.
