Dawgs Start Strong With Runner-Up In Boston
September 21, 2018 | Cross Country
BOSTON – Washington's first big effort of the season was a step in the right direction as the Husky men finished second in a strong field at the Battle In Beantown today at Franklin Park in Jamaica Plain. The 26th-ranked Dawgs put eight runners in the top-40 and finished ahead of a trio of teams ranked in the national top-30.
With their scoring five all in the top-25, the Huskies scored 70 points to take second behind 10th-ranked Syracuse which scored 37 points for the win. The Huskies edged out 30th-ranked Mississippi which was third with 77 points. 17th-ranked Virginia was fourth with 98, unranked North Carolina was fifth at 153, and 12th-ranked Campbell scored 189 points for sixth.
The Huskies got out well, with five runners in the top-10 at around the 3k mark, giving UW an early lead. Sitting in third in the team race in the late stages, the Huskies had a good close to get back into second.
"All in all it was a good opener, and definitely much improved from where we started," said Head Coach Andy Powell. "We beat a number of really good teams, but there is still a long ways to go. There is a lot we need to work on. We've just got to work on running together. Our one to five spread was about thirty seconds, and I think we need to get that a little tighter."
Senior Tanner Anderson, in his first race as a Dawg, was the first Husky across the finish line today, taking sixth-place in 24:15 for the 8,000-meters. Sophomore Tibebu Proctor was four seconds back in 11th-place and sophomore Talon Hull was five seconds after that in 13th in 24:24.
The fourth Husky was junior Julius Diehr in 24:33 and senior Mahmoud Moussa capped the scoring in 24th-place in 24:43. Right behind him in 26th was junior Mick Stanovsek in his Husky debut in 24:46. Nick Laccinole crossed in 24:53 for 32nd.
Also cracking the top-40 was sophomore Nate Beamer, taking 39th in 24:57. Freshman Alex Slenning made his collegiate debut as well, placing 93rd overall in the field of over 200.
"A lot of good performances but hopefully they aren't satisfied," Powell said. "Happy to see Talon out there racing for the first time in a long time, he just ran within himself. Tanner stayed pretty controlled. Tibs was really good, Julius and Nick were good. Mick had a conservative race plan so he moved up well.
"It's a good start, we just need to improve on it."
The next opportunity for the Dawgs will be Pre-Nationals in Wisconsin on Oct. 12. In the meantime, the women's team will get its first race next Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Stanford Invitational.
