UW Rowing Announces Men's Coaching Staff For 2018-19
September 18, 2018 | Men's Rowing
The 2018-19 Washington men's rowing coaching staff will be both new and familiar as the full-time staff will include three coaches with UW experience, but all in new roles.
Washington men's rowing coach Michael Callahan announced the new staff today. Sam Dommer will serve as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator while Sergio Espinoza and Henry Prosser were named assistant coaches.
All three were part of the Washington men's staff last season, but all three have taken a step up for 2018-19.
Dommer, a former UW captain and United States Olympian who joined the Husky staff in 2016-17, will oversee recruiting and freshman development. Dommer was a part of the UW program that won the James Ten Eyck Trophy at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships. Over the summer, Dommer took charge the UW men's eight that won the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Dommer capped his collegiate career with a win in the men's varsity eight grand final at the 2014 IRAs, when the Huskies won their unprecedented (at the time) fourth straight IRA crown. A first-team all-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 selection, Dommer earned the UW's Top Dawg Award and Tom Hansen Pac-12 Conference Medal as Washington's top male senior student-athlete. He also won IRA titles in the varsity eight as a sophomore and junior, and won the freshman eights title in 2010. After college, he rowed in the U.S. men's eight at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
"Taking the new freshman class and imparting to them the Washington Rowing way is a privilege," Dommer said. "There's a lot to learn, both on and off the water, and I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Espinoza, who spent the last two years as an intern coach (including last season as head intern coach), will assist Dommer in recruiting and over see the oarsmen's development, working with the Huskies' third and fourth eights. After coaching at the UW last season, the former University of Puget Sound rower, was in charge of the United States Under-23 men's coxed four, which won the gold medal at the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Poland.
"This program prides itself on development," Espinoza said. "It's what we do best, and I'm looking forward to being a part of that."
Prosser, a Portland native who rowed at Oregon State, joined the UW staff as an intern coach in 2017-18 after spending the spring of 2017 coaching the Oregon State's Women's Rowing team. At UW in his role as an assistant coach, Prosser will continue to work with the development of student-athletes while also enhancing UW rowing program's digital outreach through his expertise in social media and graphic design. He'll also oversee and expand the UW's live streaming system that Prosser helped implement for the 2018 racing season.
"We want to lead the space in rowing technology and media," Prosser said. "It's important to remain on the cutting edge, both when it comes to the sport itself, and in all the ways we get our message out to fans, supporters, parents and recruits.
