August 04, 2018 | Men's Rowing
MOTHERWELL, Scotland, U.K. – Silver medals for two former Washington rowers competing for Great Britain were the highlights of the day for Huskies Saturday morning at the 2018 European Rowing Championships.
Fiona Gammond, a 2015 graduate, and her British crew took home the silver medal in the women's eight, nearly catching first-place Romania down the stretch. The Brits spend much of the race in third position, but passed the Dutch shell in the final 500. In the end, Gammond's boat crossed the finish line in 6:10.09, just over a second behind Romania (6:08.98).
Earlier Saturday, former UW captain Jacob Dawson '16 and his British men's four also earned the silver, with Romania taking the gold once more. Dawson's boat ran second for the entire race and closed the gap on the Romanians at the end while holding off the third-place French crew. Great Britain finished in 5:55.71, while the gold medal time was 5:54.34.
UW's Bram Schwarz '20 and his Netherlands men's four finished fifth in that same final, while Serbian Viktor Pivac '18 took fifth place in the men's four B final.
In the women's double sculls, Washington's Valentina Iseppi and her Italian teammate Alessandra Montesano just missed out on a medal. The Italian double was beaten to the finish line by the Lithuanian entry by just sixth hundredths of a second (6:56.54 to 6:56.60) for the bronze medal in the A final. France won gold and the Netherlands took the silver.
In the women's double sculls B final, UW's Sofia Asoumanaki '21, representing Greece, finished in second place.
Also on Saturday, Italians Chiara Ondoli '18 and Carmela Pappalardo '20 led from start to finish to earn first place in the B final in the women's quadruple sculls.
The regatta comes to a close on Sunday, when the only race of the day involving the UW is the men's eight A final. Simon van Dorp '20 and his Netherlands crew will vie for a medal in that final, which is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. BST/4:45 a.m. PDT, the last competition of the regatta.
