UW Rowing Well Represented At Under-23 World Championships
July 22, 2018 | Men's Rowing
Washington Rowing will once again be well-represented at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships, which get underway this week on Lake Malta in Poznan, Poland.
Medals will be awarded in 23 men's and women's events, and UW rowers will participate in seven of them.
The United States men's eight, led by Husky head coach Michael Callahan, features six current and former Huskies, including coxswain Rielly Milne '18 and rowers Chris Carlson '19, Andrew Gaard '19, Samuel Halbert '20, Arne Landboe '18, and Madison Molitor '19.
Two other Husky men will also compete in the men's eight as Harvey Kay '20 will row for Great Britain and Gert-Jan van Doorn '21 will represent the Netherlands.
Three other UW oarsmen will row for the United States. Chase Deitner '21 will compete in American lightweight quad sculls while Elijah Maesner '19 will row in the four. Veteran international Ben Davison '19 will compete in the single sculls. Davison won bronze at the Under-23s last year as part of the U.S. men's four and has also competed at Under-23 Worlds in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Nick Everett '21, a freshman on last year's Husky team, will row for Canada in the men's quad sculls.
The United States women's eight includes three UW rowers, all with previous international experience, as Elise Beuke '19, Marlee Blue '19 and Brooke Pierson '18 are all in that crew. Also competing in an eight is incoming freshman Lisa Goossens, who will represent the Netherlands.
Three Washington women will row in the women's double sculls, representing three countries. Sofia Asoumanaki '21, the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year in 2018 and a 2016 Olympian, will represent Greece. Valentina Iseppi '20 will scull for Italy and Great Britain's Anna Thornton, who won the Stonor Challenge Trophy (W2x) at the Henley Royal Regatta earlier this month, will vie for a medal in Poznan.
