Stacey Fung Earns ITA All-America Honors
June 07, 2018 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – Stacey Fung picked up the most coveted honor in college tennis to cap off her outstanding junior season as she was officially named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week. Fung becomes the seventh Husky ever to be named All-America and the first in seven years.
The Vancouver, B.C. product played at the top of the Husky singles lineup in every match for the second straight season and continued to raise her game to new levels. She lost just one dual match all year, winning 18 matches at the No. 1 spot. Overall, Fung was 27-5, a winning percentage of .843 that is the third-highest for a single season in school history.
Fung is the first Husky All-American since 2011, when Venise Chan and Denise Dy both earned All-America honors in singles and doubles, and the first for fourth-year Head Coach Robin Stephenson.
"I am so proud of Stacey for this amazing accomplishment," Stephenson said. "Being named an All-American is the highest honor in college tennis. She earned this each and every day since she arrived on campus and she deserves every bit of the success she has had and will continue to have. Stacey is extremely coachable and hard working and is focused everyday on her goals. She is also one of the most competitive players I have ever coached and she pours her heart and soul into everything she does and embodies what it means to be a Husky. This season was fantastic for her but the most exciting thing is that her best tennis is still ahead of her and I can't wait to see how she leads the team next year in her senior season."
She is one of just four Pac-12 players named All-America in singles for 2017-18.
Fung ended the season ranked 20th nationally and was ranked as high as No. 6 during the year. She had 12 wins over players ranked in the top-100 and three over top-25 players. Based on the year-end ITA rankings, Fung defeated a total of 17 ranked players.
"I have always admired and looked up to the All-Americans that have come out of the UW women's tennis program," said Fung. "To be recognized alongside them is more than an honor! I am so lucky to be surrounded by coaches, family and teammates who push my boundaries and give me endless love and support on the daily!! I can't wait to rep the Purple and Gold for one last year, Go Dawgs!"
She earned her first All-Pac-12 First Team selection this season and qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships for the second year in a row, getting a first round win before losing in the round of 32. Fung also advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships back in the fall.
