DePonte, Plain Earn Weekly Honors From Pac-12
May 07, 2018 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - For the third time this year, the #5 Washington Huskies earned multiple weekly honors from the Pac-12 in the same week, with Julia DePonte being named Player of the Week and Gabbie Plain earning Freshman of the Week. It is the second such honor for DePonte, who also won the award March 6, and third for Plain. Washington has now had ten weekly awards from the conference this season, the third time in program history the Huskies have earned double-digit weekly awards.
DePonte helped the Huskies to their fifth Pac-12 series sweep last weekend, tying a school record for most sweeps in a season, with a .556/.636/1.333 line in three games at Oregon State. On Friday, the senior had her second career multi-homer game, hitting two home runs as part of a perfect 3-for-3 day. DePonte would also double on Sunday, scoring the first run of the game for the Huskies. DePonte now has 14 home runs on the season, nearly doubling her previous single-season high of eight, set in 2016.
In Pac-12 play, DePonte is second in the conference with six home runs and now has 12 homers in conference play in her career. She has a .672 slugging percentage in conference games, good for fifth in the Pac-12. DePonte is one of only nine players to drive in at least 15 runs in Pac-12 play this season, with 17 RBI. She has 47 RBI overall on the season, putting her just three away from her first 50-RBI season.
Plain earned the win in all three games of the sweep over Oregon State, allowing only one run in her 17.0 innings of work. The freshman recorded her third career double-digit strikeout game on Friday, then followed that up with her seventh career shutout on Saturday. Plain is just the ninth Husky freshman to ever record 15 or more wins in a season and has the third-most shutouts in her freshman year of any Husky newcomer.
With her third Freshman of the Week award, Plain now has been so honored by the Pac-12 more than any other player in Husky history. Taran Alvelo is the only other Husky to ever receive multiple Pac-12 Freshman of the Week awards, winning it twice in 2016. The three weekly awards for Plain are also the most by a Husky pitcher since Danielle Lawrie's school-record eight in 2010.
