Fung, Wong Win Opening-Round Matches
May 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Representing Washington women's tennis, Stacey Fung and Vanessa Wong both won their opening-round matches at the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
This is the first time since 2011 that both two Husky players have been selected to compete in the singles championships and that two Husky players won in the first round. Venise Chan and Denise Dy won their opening rounds as well in 2011.
Wong played first in the first wave of matches against No. 25 Emma Davis from Wake Forest on Wednesday morning starting at 8 a.m. ET. Despite her opponent playing on her home courts, Wong took her down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Her second-round opponent will be Arianne Hartono from Ole Miss.
"Winning my first NCAA match felt awesome," Wong said. "An individual tournament is definitely a big change from the dual matches we've been playing all season. I was happy with how I came out to play and compete right from the start. I was able to play freely and hang in to some long points. The level here is really high and I'm looking forward to competing again tomorrow!"
In the 9:30 a.m. ET wave of matches, Fung played No. 32 Rosie Johanson from Virginia. In her second NCAA Singles Championships appearance, Fung took the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-4. Last season when she competed in the championships as an individual, she also won her first round. Fung's next matchup is against Veronica Miroshnichenko from Loyola Marymount in the second round.
"It was a great first round," Fung said. "I played against a girl who I grew up playing with in Vancouver, so I am happy to get the win. I was a bit nervous this morning, but I was able to channel that energy well in my match. I'm happy to be here with my teammates, coaches and mom!"
The second round start times will be announced later today. Check the Twitter page (@UW_Wtennis) for the match times. The doubles portion of the championships also begin tomorrow, which Wong and Miki Kobayashi will be competing in.
