After Perfect Game, Plain Named Pac-12 Freshman Of The Week
April 09, 2018 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - After throwing just the second perfect game by a freshman in school history, Gabbie Plain was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. Plain became the fourth pitcher in UW history to throw a perfect game, joining Danielle Lawrie, Jamie Graves, and Nancy Wagner. Plain and Lawrie are the only freshman to have accomplished this feat.
This is Plain's second Freshman of the Week honor this season, joining Taran Alvelo as the only Huskies to ever win multiple Freshman of the Week awards. The Australian was also named the NFCAΒ National Pitcher of the Week earlier this year, one of only two freshman in Husky history to be honored with a national weekly award, joining Jamie Clark in 2000.
Plain threw the seventh perfect game in Husky history this week, retiring all 15 batters she faced against Utah on Saturday. Plain would strike out five in the game and only allowed two balls to leave the infield. She is now sixth in the country and leads the Pac-12 in ERA at 0.70 on the season.
This is the seventh weekly honor from the Pac-12 for Washington this season. The Huskies have won Player of the Week four times, while Alvelo has won Pitcher of the Week and Plain has now taken home two Freshman of the Week awards. Taylor Van Zee and Julia DePonte have each won Player of the Week awards, while Kirstyn Thomas has twice won it. The last time Washington won at least seven weekly honors from the conference was 2010, when Lawrie won eight Pitcher of the Week awards and Taylor Smith brought home a Player of the Week award.
The Huskies are at home again this week, looking to continue a nine-game Pac-12 winning streak. Washington will host Cal, with game one set for Friday, April 13 at 7:00 pm. Tickets for all home games are available online.
