Vea Taken By Tampa Bay With 12th Pick In NFL Draft
April 26, 2018 | Football
Washington's Vita Vea was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 12th pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, marking the fifth Husky to go in the first round over the last four drafts.
Vea, a defensive tackle from Milpitas, Calif., won the Pac-12's Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year award and the Morris Trophy (top defensive lineman in the conference) as a junior in 2017, when he was also a second-team All-America selection.
The 6-foot-4, 347-pound Vea anchored a Husky defense that led the conference in both scoring and total defense in each of his three years. A second-team All-Pac-12 and Academic All-Pac-12 pick as a sophomore in 2016, Vea notched 100 tackles and 15 tackles for loss in three years, playing in all 40 games.
Last year, UW receiver John Ross was chosen by Cincinnati with the ninth overall pick while, in 2015, three Huskies went in the first round: DT Danny Shelton (Cleveland, 12th), CB Marcus Peters (Kansas City, 18th) and LB Shaq Thompson (Carolina, 25th).
The 2018 NFL Draft continues with rounds two and three Friday and the last four rounds on Saturday.
