Sis Bates Wins First Career Pac-12 Player Of The Week Award
March 26, 2018 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference honored Sis Bates as the Player of the Week after #1 Washington's three-game sweep of #9 Arizona this last weekend. Bates is the fourth Husky to win Player of the Week this year, joining Taylor Van Zee, Julia DePonte, and Kirstyn Thomas, who has won the award twice. Taran Alvelo has also won a Pitcher of the Week award and Gabbie Plain has earned a Freshman of the Week award.
Bates' award marks the first time in Washington history that the Huskies have won more than four Player of the Week awards in a single season. Washington won the award four times in 1996 and 2000. The four different Huskies having been so honored also matches the most ever for Washington, set in 2000 when Jaime Clark, Jenny Topping, Jamie Graves, and Kelly Hauxhurst all won the award.
Bates hit .455/.571/.636 over the last week, helping the Huskies to their first sweep of Arizona since 2010. In game one of the series, Bates roped a single to leftfield with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. That was the start of a stretch in which Bates would reach base in six consecutive plate appearances and eight of nine to end the weekend. Bates reached base in all four plate appearances in the 4-3 game-two win, her fourth game this year reaching base every plate appearance (min. 4 PA).
The sophomore now leads the Huskies in batting average at .436 on the season and has already set new career highs in home runs, walks, and stolen bases. She is sixth in the nation and second in the Pac-12 to her teammate Thomas with 37 runs scored this year. Bates needs just five runs and eight RBI to match last year's totals, accomplished in 64 games.
This week, Washington heads to California for a three-game series with Stanford. Game one of that series is set for Thursday, March 29 at 6:00 pm.
