December 28, 2018 | Tyee Club
2018 was another fantastic season for the Washington football team under the leadership of head coach Chris Petersen as the Huskies won the Pac-12 Conference title and earned a trip to the 105th Rose Bowl Game.
Washington will face Ohio State in "The Granddaddy of Them All" on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif. The Huskies will make their 15thย Rose Bowl appearance in program history, which is tied for the third-most in the game's storied history. It will be Washington's first appearance in the Rose Bowl since 2001 when the Huskies defeated Purdue, 34-24.
After a 28-15 victory against Washington State in the Boeing Apple Cup Series, the Huskiesย earned a trip to the Pac-12 Championship in Santa Clara, Calif.. It was the sixth straight year the Huskies took down the rival Cougars.
The Huskies would go on to beat Utah, 10-3, winning their second Pac-12 title in the past three years. Sophomore Byron Murphy was named the MVP of the Pac-12 Championship Game after he scored the game's only touchdown on a 66-yard interception return.
Washington has been led by a core group of seniors that have made their marks all over the Husky record books. Quarterback Jake Browning broke the school record for passing yards in a career and became the winningest QB in Pac-12 history midway through the season. Running back Myles Gaskin became the all-time rushing leader in Washington history early in the year and became only the 10th player in FBS history to rush for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons. Linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven earned a bevy of recognition for his play as he was tabbed an All-America selection by numerous publications and was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Burr-Kirven, who lead the NCAA-FBS in tackles with 165, was also named the Pat Tillman Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.
